I rmember when he was hired, it was an "out of left field" thing. There were a couple of good candidates from other NFL teams, but when the news came that it was Mixon, it was a shock.

Mixon's background was in the wrong specialty (color vs play by play) with the wrong sport (basketball vs football). Yet there he was...

Never really understood why the Panthers went so far out of the box other than that Mixon was relatively well known in the region.

Current Pistons voice Mark Champion (Lions PxP at the time) wanted the gig. He was an absolute gem, too. But, nope. We settled on UNC’s color guy (for hoops) with no lead experience.

I was perplexed at the entire process.

Then again...

I remember the name. He was actually my preferred candidate.

I looked up some samples of his work online and posted them on another board that was active at the time. Don't remember hearing Mixon's name till it was announced he was getting the job.

And yeah, it sounds like a very Jerry Richardson choice.

Found a clip of Champion calling the game when Barry Sanders broke 2000 yards.

It's always fun to watch Barry Sanders highlights anyway, and this one brings back memories because I watched it happen on TV.

Bonus: Original Panther Pete Metzelaars is part of the clip.

Love me some late 90’s NFL. Nice post.

Barry Sanders, Emmitt Smith, Thurman Thomas, Brett Favre, Jerry Rice, Joe Montana / Steve Young, Andre Reed, John Randle, Darryl Talley, Dan Marino, Jim Kelly...

Yeah, there's some great memories from those years.

I guess white folks don't know how to announce. Is that the gist of your post?

no, just those 2.  mixon is creepy ie 'cam massages the ball under center'...  and greg sounds like a robot, a super white midwest robot somebody made as a joke to sound like the whitest most practical white person ever.  and what am i doing up at this hour?  f'ing plott hounds busted out again.  i'm sure the law will be up here tomorrow.  there's a fence. invisible fence wire hanging off fence, hot wires at top and bottom of fence.  before anyone thinks they're in a tiny lot like some people do, the fence is 1,320 feet in circumference.

Durham and Mixon did both basketball and football games.

    • With the contract money an OT first rounder makes you can ALWAYS get a new girlfriend.  And probably an upgrade at that.  You only got 2 parents.
    • Brother. You are wholly confusing comparing situations and applying actual standards like most other franchises do like simply getting into a playoff series and winning at least 1 or 2 series games with praising. Nobody is praising the Hawks. Nobody is praising the Magic. Nobody here likes those teams. But reality is reality. The Hawks like other franchises have traded players fired coaches etc but they can still win a couple playoff games. How is that not the bare floor for you or anyone else? What are we doing here if it isn't? We've seen eye to eye on many things over the years. But you are in the camp on the Hornets where you are emotionally attached to LaMelo where you feel the need to carry his water like he's got that juice. That's cool that you feel that way. It's your prerogative. But I differ from that viewpoint entirely. If he had that juice we would not have gotten wiped off the court in 2 play in games with 2 different coaching staffs and rosters. if people don't like hearing that well I'm sorry but how the hell is this team ever going to get better and ultimately go anywhere in the postseason if we just blindly pat them on the back for getting their asses whooped before they actually even get into the real playoffs? There seem to be some Bryce Young level standards being applied here. That's wild to me. But to each his own.
    • Proctor/Freeling were always the belles of the ball where we were picking. What those two *could* become at OT was far greater than what others could be at their respective positions and I’m glad our FO could see that.
