Unresolved issue for the #Panthers: The status of LT Matt Kalil, whose $7M salary become fully guaranteed tomorrow. My understanding is no decision is coming soon, because Kalil’s salary is guaranteed for injury already – he’s still rehabbing his knee. No rush for a resolution

FFS!

What I've been saying for the past 24 hours, keeping him on the roster for now is the smart play.

NFL.com's Ian Rapoport reports the Panthers are in "no rush" to make a decision on LT Matt Kalil's roster status.

Dave Gettleman's disastrous 2017 free agent signing's $7 million salary becomes "guaranteed" on Friday but for injury only. In other words, the Panthers can still cut him once he passes a physical. Kalil was one of the league's very worst left tackles in 2017 before missing all of 2018 with a mysterious knee issue. With Taylor Moton and Daryl Williams ready to man tackle, Kalil will likely be sent packing.

It’s the “but for injury only” is the part I don’t get.

So what is the cap hit if we keep him.  And cut him after training camp? Need @stbugs to weigh in on this one.

that doesnt count William's contract, counting it the team has 6m in cap space and rookies will cost 5m of that space.

obviously... but it illustrates the numerical differences in cutting Matt Kalil at different points, as I intended.

Rookie pool could likely be around $9M IIRC, so right now we're actually in the red.

We've still got some guys like Kalil, Smith, Searcy, Cockrell, etc. that I am not sure how they pan out. But, we can make the money happen when we need to.

We still have several people we can extend/restructure as well.
