If we do go 3-4 (and evidence is mounting that we will go full bore rather than "hybrid) then I'm not sure that trend continues.

Also Carolina runs base defense more then just about anyone else in the NFL. around 50% of the time the last two seasons.

He's 6-6 and 270 pounds, makes much more sense as a 3-4 end. He's got all the tangible traits you want in a 3-4 end. no idea about skill set but isnt that true with most of these transitions. I put Addison at OLB because he played that for Washington and got reps while in thier ps.

Pretty small for a 3-4 DE. Most are 290 to 300 these days with the lighter ones about 285.

Put 20 lbs on him

Not sure he can cover well enough.

That's not what they are really expected to do. Do you think Clowney and Peppers and Suggs were there for the coverage skills?

Its Bleacher Report but very few of these rush OLB are good in coverage

Here you go.

DE - Butler/ Qualls

NT - Poe/ Hamilton

DE - Short/ Obada

OLB - Addison/ A. Williams

 ILB - Thompson / A. Smith

ILB - Kuechly

OLB - Haynes / Cox.

I think the Panthers have been hiding their intentions really well so far.  But there is some confusing personnel issues going on. They brought in Hamilton and Qualls who are 3-4 DL guys.  If we go to a full 3-4 don’t sleep on Qualls for DE. Played DE for Washington in college who runs a pure 3-4.   Everyone is raving about Khalen Saunders this year.  Qualls was the same kind of guy last year. He is explosive and can also do back flips.  Damn, I have a hard time getting my fat ass out of a chair anymore let alone a back flip.

If we go to a full 3-4 I think will be Shaqs last year with us.  Not really a 3-4 ILB. I think he will get washed inside with the hog mollies.   A. Smith actually fits that role better.

Also in a 3-4  J Carter has no role that I can see.   So I have no idea what the do with him.   Would have been better off getting the Tackle Crosby in the 5th last year if that’s the case

A. Williams is a really raw kid but at 6’3” 247 he would fit a OLB.   But he would have to learn it.   He played MLB growing up and SLB for Detroit.  Decent prospect to develop but that may take a bit.

Plus a lot of these guys would have to loose or gain a ton of weight   Then who knows how they will play .

Im still on the fence about this if it is going to be a full 3-4 transition.   I think I like the hybrid idea a little better   But I also agree it’s easier to get 3-4 OLB’s all over the draft unlike 4-3 de’s that you have to be in the top 10 to get a good one.   Look at Zadarius Smith.  The Ravens got him in the 4th  at pick #122 and will turn around and get a 3rd rd comp for him after he leaves.  Haynes could turn out to be really good if we run a 3-4.   That’s how you retool a defense consistently.

Dismissing is bad. Lobs in the 3-4 are asked to cover. And Peppers was certainly better at it than most of his position.

Asking somebody that was raw to begin with, and developing as a 4-3 end, to then be one of the edges in a 3-4 is a crazy challenge.  Rushing the passer should be a bit easier/more consistent though.

Defensive ends and even defensive tackes in a 3-4 are occasionally asked to cover a zone, especially in a zone blitz (which we run) but nobody puts a huge amount of stock in their ability. It's more an "element of surprise" sort of thing.

Ditto with 3-4 edge rushing linebackers.

It's still about recognition, and responding.

More about responsibility.

Tackles occasionally go out for passes on trick plays but it doesn't happen often enough that I'm judging what tackle I want by how good he is at catching passes.

Back when we had Kevin Greene and Lamar Lathon we were running the Dick LeBeau style of zone blitz (3-4 alignment). Under Rivera we've been running the Jim Johnson version (4-3 alignment). Signs now are pointing to us going back to the LeBeau version, and if you remember Greene and Lathon's roles from back then, they weren't exactly doing a lot of coverage.

I wouldn't sleep on Andre Smith and Marquis Haynes

Smith looked like TD-lite before his injury and Haynes is average with his hands in the dirt but has alot more potential in space IMO.

Butler and KK would be ends with Poe at the nose. Keek and Shaq in the middle with Addison and Haynes on the outside with Smith subbing in.

Jermaine Carter and Jared Norris???? Backup ILB ??

    • I tend to look at all of these guys and wonder how committed they are to doing special teams? It's a big deal when you're fighting for roster spots. And we need massive refreshes to all phases of the special teams game. And the idea that four or five of these players could see rotational use outside of special teams would be a win. This team has accumulated quite a bit of dead wood over the last five years and its time to take an axe to some of it. These new fellows have a shot to benefit from that if they can really push. That being said, wow that receivers room is crowded right now. I'm not sure if I was a vet player with more than 2 years experience other than Adam Thielen if I'd be too sure of my future here. Tet is guaranteed a spot, Coker earned his for sure and they aren't done with XL developing yet. That's only two to three spots left for the entire room. It's going to be very competitive and better for Bryce's future, too. Safety and linebacker are the opportunity spots here this season. There's room for the right guy and we may see a starter eventually from one of these UDFAs, either by merit or injury.
    • Aho and Jarvis just gripping it too tight right now. Relax, play their 200 ft game and the shots will start to find the net. Freddie has been excellent and welcome back Mista Svechnikov. Burns.....well, thank goodness for Slavin.
    • Supposedly he plans on staying in college for all 4 years.
