Least favorite projected player at #16?

We have had a couple of topics about who we think/want the first pick to be. How about who do we not want?

If I had to choose one of the players being commonly projected to be the pick to take a hard pass on, it would be Andre Dillard. His pass pro wasnt bad, but we are a team that emphasizes running the ball. Plus all of the other question marks that come with the differences between playing in a predominantly spread offense vs pro sets.

Dillard

He has potential to be good down the road but isnt going to be a day 1 impact player or stater.

Drafting a guy to redshirt isnt ideal for us at this time as we have major holes om defense as well.  Such as Edge rusher, where we were among the leagues worse.  And this class is ripe with talented edge rushers.

We are also moving to a 3-4 meaning we are going to need a stud interior guy to add to the mix at 3-4 DE, and there are studs there as well.

If the team didn't have as many holes as it does, I would be 100% on board. I'm with you though, I want to see #16 be a day 1 starter. I would love getting starters in the 1st and 2nd rounds with both 3rd round picks (should we not trade up) being rotational guys that can eventually start next season or even as early as the end of this season.

I just can't justify Dillard at #16 when Max Scharping could be had as early as the 2nd or as late as the compensatory 3rd (though I think he is silently climbing up teams' draft boards since they can kick him inside on year one, get him a full NFL season under his belt complete with strength & conditioning, and then kick him to the outside where he can play on either side of the line).

I'm stoked at the aggressive move towards a true hybrid defense. I like Shaq-Luke-Irvin as our WLB-MLB-SLB trio and my fingers are crossed that Short & Poe step it up this season and that Addison doesn't fall off. Get ourselves a stud edge rusher and continue to fortify the lines.

We are not directly moving to a 3-4 where do you guys keep getting this from......

It's ''buzzy'' people hold on to ''buzzy'', the team mentioned ''Odd'' Fronts, and incorporating some 3-4 looks, not a full on switch. Considering the majority of the NFL is predominately in ''11'' aka 1 HB / 1 TE defenses by and large are operating from Nickel personnel more often than not. So whether a team is a 43 or 34 front is becoming a little less important as no matter the case, more often than not you have your best rushers in at DE in that personnel grouping.

I expect some looks from 3-4 similar to what ARI was doing with Deone Buchanon (where you're showing a 3-4 look) but you're using Nickel personnel essentially. Barron had a similar role with LAR prior to release. teams are looking to match up the receiving threat of 11, as well as it's ability to run the ball effective as the defense typically has to sub out a LB for a S, or 3rd corner to better match up.

having the 3-4 looks will help with personnel match ups week to week as it's more flexible than the 43, and allows pressure from angles that are less direct when looking a 43 front.

The thought of straight up drafting a ''34'' end early are far fetched, it will likely be a pass rushers with scheme flexibility aka a guy that can rush from a 2, or 3 pt stance, or a day 1 starter at offensive line.

Considering the off-season we've had / current personnel, it makes the most sense to bring in that scheme versatile defender if available. Our pass rush needs a speed infusion, and young talent to move forward with.

Anything is possible regarding scheme. If the 3-4 hybrid looks bad or it creates too much pressure on Ron's job, you better bet we will treat Irving like CJ last year. Was it Evan Mathis we drafted for one  OL scheme and fliped back to our old scheme that he couldn't play well very early in the season we drafted him and then he went off to have a very good carrer... elsewhere? Once the dust settles we will see what is what, till then it's all guessing.

I’m on board with any offensive lineman or d-lineman. Outside of that I don’t have a strong preference.

I like O-lineman because they can come in and compete immediatley at LT and or replace Williams next year if he walks. If they can’t win the LT job they could easily win the LG spot this year.

DE- We clearly need an infusion of talent here and Irvin is only on a 1 year deal

DT- Short and Poe are strong candidates to be cap casualties next year and I don’t see us picking up the 5th year option on Butler.  Any DT could become an immediate part of the rotation and take on a full time starter job by next season.

If for some reason we think a WR or safety is far and away BPA I could get on board with that too. Safety speaks for itself and WR could push Torrey off the roster and save us 5 million, while also giving us insurance in the event Samuel can’t stay a healthy.

Anything else and I would probably be pretty displeased with the pick.

Also worth noting Jourdan Rodrique tweeted Hurney mentioned he’s honed in on “about 5-6 players at 16”,if all are gone we may trade down.

    • I used to think Juan was a Zod alt. Agree he's a great poster.
    • Hawks said nah we good and sent him to the shadow realm aka the Wizards. Cold blooded. I mean they're 2-2 in a series with a young up and coming Knicks team largely through 34 year old CJ McCollum. Even if they ultimately lose the series at least they are there and have something to build on. I think Hornets fans are just beaten down and lack the objectivity to assess the situation. They think we are going to get so much worse if and when we finally change gears. Worse how? We've already been a lottery team for years now. We've already been looking to win our first playoff series in about a quarter century. We already can't get past the play in and in failing to do so we have completely embarrassed ourselves twice looking like we don't even belong. Honestly there is absolutely no excuse for a team like the Magic to be more competitive and successful than us in the playoffs. Absolutely disgusting. But that's just me. I was fuging lit when we got the Hornets back in Charlotte but that is old old news. It's time for these boys to get into a playoff series. Enough is enough. If they can't do it for 2026-27 then they need to make wholesale changes regardless.
    • Not one single pick that is asking me why we drafted a guy in the first place. It was a guy we needed and/or a guy that had certain traits making them stand out. Best of all, I feel everyone we drafted are capable of stepping onto the field this year and have a meaningful role (even Kuwatch on special teams). Obviously, nothing is guaranteed but I'm not seeing any huge flags on guys because they're risky projects or massive overreaches.
