NFL: Metcalf's phone call

If you watched the draft coverage over the last few days, you might have seen the clip of DK Metcalf getting his phone call from Pete Carroll.

After Caroll tells Metcalf they've drafted him, Metcalf tearfully asks "Why did you wait so long?"

I'm curious as to people's reaction to that. Obviously, he's a kid and he was emotional, but I've heard a few people say he sounded ungrateful by implying that they should have taken him sooner.

Mind you, there's also his showing up to meet his new coach shirtless (and Pete Carroll removing his own shirt, yikes) to talk about, but I'm primarily interested in people's opinion about the phone call.

Did it come across as ungrateful over the audio? I’m reading it as if he were joking.

Yeah, I thought it was just awkward when he kept saying it mattered (that he waited that long) and interrupting Carroll as he was talking.  Carroll saying, "well none of that matters now" and Metcalf saying, "yes it does...  yes it does..." That was painfully awkward.  But, understandable.  He was emotional, as any elite athlete would be in that position after being projected in the first round by many sources and then dropping.

I think he was a little hurt by not being drafted sooner. And yeah, I can see how saying what I he did the way he did could be taken as being a little ungrateful, but my interpretation was primarily "emotional kid is emotional."

I'm in the camp that believes he probably is more workout warrior than anything else, but we'll see.

This thing has been shoved down the throat of anyone who watches nfl network and I have no idea why. Now I get it on the panthers forum too. Fantastic.

Total non story. Emotional player wanted to be drafted higher. Cool. Everyone does. Don’t blame him at all for saying what he said

I get the point, but you did click and comment.  You are a product of the man's system!!

His wallet was greatly affected but hes in a pretty good situation.

Valid---at this point, I imagine it is more ego and pride, however.  I have been waiting to have my number called for 20 years.  It is agonizing pressure.

He showed up shirtless because Seahawk scout asked him to. Rest of the department thought it would be funny.

The part on why did you take so long. I think it's a combination of him hearing the wrong things during the draft process and getting caught up in that hype he was a first round pick. He never really was going to be taken in the first round by all reports. He upset about being lied to by a bunch of people and now has a chip on his shoulder and has learned a lesson.

Also with Baldwin most likely having to retire, he's going to get every chance to be the lead guy up in Seattle. Very good situation for him.

    • Fowler: Bucs 23, Panthers 16. Baker Mayfield only won a single game when he was an unimpressive Carolina starter, but somehow he’s 5-0 when playing AGAINST the Panthers. For the Panthers to pull off this upset, they’ll need to score at least in the mid-20s. With Tampa Bay relatively healthy following a mini-bye (and Mike Evans’ return is huge), it feels like this will be too tough a task. Kaye: Bucs 24, Panthers 20. The win-loss-win-loss streak comes to an end. It’s hard to trust the play-calling following the loss to the New Orleans Saints. The Panthers know what’s on the line, but they also knew last week, too. It’ll be close; I just have trouble trusting a positive outcome after a defeating one on the road. Zietlow: Panthers 38, Bucs 35. This prediction goes against conventional wisdom, but then again, conventional wisdom doesn’t seem to apply to these Panthers. This group, after all, has yet to lose back-to-back contests since Weeks 1 and 2. I think they win this one to make Week 18 interesting — and yes, that’s even with motivated Baker Mayfield and future Hall of Famer Mike Evans in good form. Why not?
    • Sam developed into a different player after he mostly sat for a year and learned a ton by being in that QB room under Shannahan in San Francisco.  Then he went to the Vikings who have a poo load of talent and another genius level offensive mind at HC in Kevin O Connel. I think they genuinely built up his confidence in a way he never did in New York or Charlotte.  He would not have been the same player if he stayed here IMO. Especially if he had been involved in that disaster season with Frank Reich in 2023, that might have cooked his confidence for good.  I guess you could argue we wouldn't have been that bad if we also kept cmc and dj i guess.
    • Willis was impressive last night given the circumstances. GB and SF seem to just have it figured out as far as QB goes.   It's frustrating, but I enjoy seeing our old players find success elsewhere.
