Free agent DT Gerald McCoy is visiting the #Panthers, beginning tomorrow night, source said. That will go into Friday, then he’ll presumably make a decision. It did sound like his visit to the #Ravens was excellent. So it’s #Ravens, #Browns or #Panthers.

3:58 PM - 29 May 2019

Let’s get it Hurn-dawg!!!!

I doubt he'd even be coming unless there had been at least some preliminary contract talks. We have to at least be in the ballpark.

He’s visited two teams and left and is clearly in no hurry to sign. He may leave us and visit other teams as well. I agree this means we’re in play over teams without visits so far like the Aints and Pats but him visiting here doesn’t mean we’re the favorites to sign him. May just be due diligence. May depend on how badly he wants to play the Bucs twice.

We need another 5 tech for our 3-4. If that is indeed where we are leaning.  Poe at NT and short is the one 5 tech.  I think Love is a good rotational guy.  But not sure about him starting there.  I think Butler is just trash but he may prove me wrong in a contract year.

I still think either McCoy or Bailey will be signed.  Our team values the front 7 much more than FS. My gut tells me Bailey is the guy.  For the right price I wouldn’t rule out McCoy.  But I think we will be outbid by someone.

For some reason, everyone wants to plug Butler in as a DE in a 3-4, but IMO he's Poe's backup at NT. I too think he's pretty much trash, but I think he's better suited at the nose than he is at DE. I think we drafted him to be a three technique, but he just doesn't have the athleticism.

I would seriously try to trade him to the Raiders for Karl Joseph. Both have little value and need a change of scenery. Even if he’s a backup, Joseph would at least provide an option at FS not named Jones.

I'd probably hang onto him and give him a look at NT first. I mean, if he's not the backup NT, then who is? I don't think Love can hold that spot down. I don't think Love really has a spot in a 3-4 look, I think he was re-signed as a situational player.

I just don’t think Butler has the “heart” to take on double-teams. No matter the scheme or situation. Maybe his light goes on with a contract ahead(maybe). To the point I’d rather just watch someone else suck.

I mean, if we could get something (like pretty much anything) for him, I wouldn't be at all opposed to trading him.

One of the things they highlighted about Butler when he was drafted was his motor. Maybe your right and he can show some of that as a NT. Him and Poe are of similar size at 6'4/6'3 330/346 lbs with Butler the former and Poe the latter.

our 2013 entire secondary were turds, but held it together for a top defense due to the insane pressure put on the QB

I know everyone is saying we don't need another DT, but consider we have no intention of extending Butler and if Poe is still dead weight this season he can be cut with some cap savings.  Then we are back to KK and McCoy.  We would only be heavy this season.

    • I've been hearing all about this "winning culture" for years while watching us piss away top shelf draft position with meaningless late season wins when we're already eliminated from the playoffs but being assured this is building "winning culture" just to inevitably suck again next year. With that said, I'll always take a playoff berth. Just make the dance and you have a chance to make some noise. But spare me the "winning culture" bullshit.
    • Winning culture trumps ALL.    Here’s my way to long take:  Last season this team started out breaking the sports books and being the lead pipe lock of the week. They finished by being a tough out for both SB teams.  I don’t think they’ll pick up right where they left off, but for the first time in years they’re on the legitimate upswing. Honest to God NFL talent has been infused.  Offense is already going to be good for 2-3 more 3rd down conversions (I don’t think anyone will argue that) a game over last year so I’ll go (very optimistically) 5-6 more points better than last year’s team. ADDED: A legit backup RB and a money WR who catches everything, along with 2 promising rooks. No significant losses (sorry Miles). KEYS: Can Dave bob and weave play calling if things aren’t working? Does protection continue to hold for Bryce. Did this team pick up dudes who know how to find the end zone or will the struggle of 3rd and goal continue.  Defense. If they can force even 2 (hopefully 3) more stops a game on third down (not asking a lot, hopefully more), that’s good for -4 (optimistic) points for opposing teams.  ADDED: legit run stuffers. Legit (appearing) edge guys. LOST: Clowney. Question: With legit 3-4 talent can Evero finally show what we have been VERY patiently waiting on? To me, EVERYTHING on defense hinges on Evero. Everything. Every position group was upgraded (still not good enough, but certainly improved).  Losing Brown early and Luvu… completely and utterly devastated the run defense. Luvu put up one of the best seasons at LB this team has ever seen. His under appreciation by some fans was criminal. He alone was our 3 down stop machine. Brown was pretty much it up front. Those 2 held RBs in check long enough for safety help to arrive.  Coaching: Halftime adjustments and no prevent defense. In a nutshell, that’s pretty much it. No cutesy offense to show off WRs/Bryce when it’s not working. Use your sledgehammers, Dave.  There is finally veteran leadership and legit NFL talent. It’s going in the right direction (I couldn’t have been more wrong last offseason) to build a winning culture, but teams have to learn how to win, especially the games where nothing is going right (this team has NEVER been able to do that). They will still lose more close games than they win, and that alone is where it all hinges.
    • With his current level of play I'm quite content to not activate his 5th year option and let him walk away for free after year 4.
