That 3-4 & Nickel Though...(PFF Projections)

There’s always room for caution because, well, injuries happen. And it’s the first full year of a new defensive scheme. But I’ve been optimistic for several weeks now that this group of pass rushers will thrive this year.

They must think that Cockrell isn't going to come back. He is still working on it, but making progress.

I would say that once he gets that belief in his surgically-repaired leg, he's probably a shoe-in (unless he just can't get right physically).

Burns on the strong side?

I'd be willing to bet game-plan based the OLB's and even McCoy and Short will move around.

  • For what it's worth most of Irvin's time was at the LOLB position in ATL, OAK, and SEA not to say he never lined up on the right
  • Marquis Haynes spent a lot of time at LE for Ole Miss
  • Christian Miller also spent a lot of time at LOLB for ALA

So there is some potential that at least early on as guys get acclimated (Irvin, Haynes, and Miller) will be on the left, and Addision, Burns, and Obada will be on the right just given where they've lined up either in college, or the pro's.

Again, I do expect to see guys moving around, but the speed we're getting ready to field is going to be like we've never seen in a long time.

Could’ve done without that picture...damn

Rivera remarked a while ago that now days, a qb has no certain spot for pressure to come from and that's what makes VMiller so bad ads is that he lines up anywhere, mostly on that side.

Yeah but teams still put their best tackle at LT and Burns will become our best pass rusher. The TE is usually beside the RT. Putting Burns at strongside will enable him to get free more, if the TE isn't lined up there,  but would slow up Addison more. I'm hoping Burns adds more weight to take on doubles from the TE and RT.

I hope Addison can thrive in the 3-4 since it will cut down on subs, but I think Irvin and Miller would be better suited to play there than Addison. I like all the options we have.

Addison is lined up over the LT in that image...

I think most of this is based off of grades, considering Seymour and Cockrell went to IR, Corn is the only player with a grade. Last year I believe Cockrell was added to start, but as we know suffered the injury, then Seymour was elevated, he had a tough time vs BUF PS Week 1, and then went to IR having TWO shoulder surgeries.

After that DJ was promoted, and Elder was depth behind Munnerlyn. I think we will see what we saw in Captains previous final year -- DJ will start in the base, then in the Nickel sets based on match ups / game plans / etc -- Cockrell or Seymour will sub in to play a combination of outside corner and nickel with DJ.

I see this as another year of depth for Elder, too much proven talent ahead of him IMO.

    • Not in same league. Caldwell just hit a 10.00 on the RAS. 2nd out of 3830 from 1987 onward.  https://x.com/MathBomb/status/2027885023387349047 Yeah I mean Louis had a sub 9.00 RAS. Still very very good, no doubt. Louis is small, no 2 ways about it. He is likely a sub package lb in nickel packages or specialized WLB. Be fine ST gunner to start for sure. 6 foot flat and 220lb is pushing it for a starting LB. At 10 to 20lbs less than the other LBs he'd better be closer to the top in most timed drills. He's gonna be challenged when some of the wrs in the class can matchup bigger stronger faster, much less TE in the run game.  Yeah instinct matter and he has them, but that size is a massive red flag compared to many of the other LBS in this class.    Rodriguez is the LB that really climbed this week from a pure grit guy to great flash with athleticism people wrote off cause he was a QB at first at UVA. 18.4mph in the backpedal. Production the last 2 years were great. I'd be thrilled with him as the future mike.   Hill likely moved out of 51 and into the top 45 picks ( Ravens at 45 I can't imagine don't bite if he makes it there). Honestly Hill imo is a 1st rounder and I'd be ok with him as he fits the MLB we have missed the last few years. People would crow it's a reach but he's top 30 all-time I'm RAS for a LB at 9.9+ . Plus he was big time in big games when he was healthy. And that br a big check: meds.
    • Miller, Melo, Coby, Moose, and Bridges all on the floor at the same time must be a nightmare for defenses lol. Switch one out for Kon and still a nightmare. Coby really does bring a true 6th man value and looks like he could start if Melo was out after only a few games of getting his feet wet.
