Maybe Gaulden is or isn't, neither of us know for sure at this point. We drafted him in the 3rd round so they must think relatively highly of him, especially if he can cover slot receivers too. I wouldnt panic yet but the uncertainty is there. We shall see.

I don't expect we really will have much of a choice, regardless. I don't see any other legitimate or better option on the roster, so I think he will basically end up as the starter by default. Let's hope that turns into something. I'm not particularly hopeful but it would be huge if he is able to play at an average level or better.

Seriously.

I'd say that y'all giving up on players before they even have a chance, saddens me, but it doesn't sadden me, because it's just stupid.

Can't fix stupid.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahaha!!!  You know if they are told to hate someone or like someone by six or so certain posters here, it is a death sentence for that person on the Huddle.  And you can't fix it.  Once they started banning people like crazy and started the super club(All-Pro), it has been a lot of stupid left over.  That kid played fine in preseason last year.  He had a great game against the Patriots in the dress rehearsal game.  Our D with his help held Brady to 3 points.  He was never grossly out of position and made some good tackles.  Since he isn't Earl Thomas though, that equals garbage.  One of the only negative things I seen was him lay out Wright in training camp last year.  And he was humbled immediately while getting cussed out by that bum Funchess.  Hell it was a good play.  I am excited about him though.  Kid has swagger.

OP didn’t say anything about not giving him a chance. In OPs scenario, Gaulden has every chance to show he belongs and either win the position or provide solid depth if he isn’t able to win the position. As opposed to having his stiffest competition be Colin fuging Jones.

But hey, let’s call people stupid for suggesting we try to bring a proven player to a position where all we have is a 3rd round guy off an unimpressive rookie season.

Can’t fix stupid indeed.

I think Joseph would be a realistic nice target and I'm not sure why the new Raiders staff has been so down on him, as they did like we did with Butler and did not exercise the 5th year option.  I wouldn't mind giving him a chance as he's still plenty young and has shown some promise.

Josh Jones is a STUD and I'm quite sure if the Packers drafted a safety first round it's likely to play the other safety position with Jones instead of to replace him.  They did lose Clinton-Dix.

Packers signed Adrian Amos

Making a trade for any of those guys would be handing the job to him.

Edit. The Panthers had a veteran backup and cut him.

Maybe you don't see it that way, but that's exactly what it is. And it still doesn't change a single point I made. Thanks for playing though.

I don't think what the OP is suggesting is crazy, but I also don't think there's a chance it happens.

As others have pointed out, nothing is going to happen before training camp, and I don't know if anything happens before final cuts.  I think it is more realistic at this point that the team claims someone else after final cuts to round out the depth at safety (if they don't keep 4 guys from our current roster) versus signing or trading for someone.

Gaulden is going to be given the chance to prove he can win a starting free safety spot.  Gaulden, Reid, and Jones are going to be 3 of out the 4 safety spots (which is what they usually keep).

Rivera seems to believe some of the other guys like Cole Luke, Damian Parms, and/or Quin Blanding could be worthy of the last safety spot.

I think everyone looks at the uncertainty at FS and is frustrated b/c there are still guys out there via trade or FA that on paper look better than what we have, but the team seems determined to use those as a last resort.

So the points you made were that op was giving up on him, and that op wasn’t giving him a chance to show he belongs. And the third point was that op was stupid for doing so. And I guess the fourth point being that you can’t fix stupid.

We’ve already addressed him having a chance to show he belongs. As long as he’s on the roster he has that chance. If your position is that we shouldn’t try to upgrade our roster or have high level competition for starting positions, then just say that, as stupid as it is. I have given you the benefit of the doubt that is not your position but I’m honestly starting to wonder.

As as far as op “giving up” on him:

“I do believe he has the talent and intangibles tocontribute.”

Straight from the OP. Doesn’t sound like “giving up” on him to me.

Now by refuting your previous 2 points, that should (at least logically) “change” your third point: that op is stupid.

Again, I agree with your 4th point that you can’t fix stupid.
