Did you guys see this?

Will Grier. I really try hard not to get too worked up about camp. But we’ve been through OTA’s. Camp is almost over. He saw live game action. Something is not clicking. He will not throw the ball down the field. He dances in the pocket. There’s an indecisiveness to his game.

Kinda sounds like he's a typical 3rd round rookie QB.

But, I've voiced my skepticism of WVU offensive skill position prospects on this forum numerous times. It just seems as if they almost never translate to the NFL.

Haven’t there been several tweets about him connecting on deep balls all throughout camp?

Yes

And besides, he is a freaking rookie. I'm sure Patrick Mahomes didnt light the world on fire his first training camp. I know that Cam didnt. Hopefully we will not need Grier this year or inthe forseeable future.

@Captain Morgan, why do you copy/paste text instead of embedding the tweets? Just out of curiosity

The embedded tweets are painfully slow to load. Especially on a page full of them.

I know others like them but one if my pet leaves is a thread full of embedded tweets. I can see thos on Twitter if I want.

Chiefs fans were universally begging for Mahomes to start. Evidently he pretty much was lighting it up from the word go.

I think Grier may do fine in time, but the quarterback I’m watching every day is having a hard time making good throws and settling himself in the pocket. There’s a deeper analysis I can provide on this, with video, and I will do that later on our site. Onepantherplace.com.

You can tell who's your future franchise QB. I'm not seeing it with Grier. Regardless I'll never agree to the decision to use that pick on a QB although it was pretty much the 4th round by then so whatever

I was hoping we wouldn't pick him, but I understand why we did with Cam coming off of back to back seasons where his shoulder didn't hold up and going back under the knife again. At some point you have to make some type of legitimate contingency plan. The reality is that very few 3rd round picks will become franchise QBs. There are usually only 5 or 6 QBs penciled in as starters going into a given season that weren't former 1st round picks. You have Brady, Prescott, Wilson, Cousins... anyone else this year?

And again, just to be clear, I’m not making a statement that he sucks this is a bad pick. I don’t know that yet. Nobody does.

I’m relaying direct observations from the field. He holds the ball way too long at this point. When he’s not doing that, he’s missing a read and doing the “bounce out” of the pocket of routine.

Those things aren’t easy to correct. What’s caught my eye the past couple of days is his lack of accuracy on intermediate/short.

I want to see him against better competition, and I want to see him playing alongside a higher level of players. That can go a long way.

In fairness Mahomes was the 10th pick overall, and Grier was the 100th.  Grier was drafted to be a quality backup with the hope he could have some additional upside to becoming a starter.

I watched almost every WVU game last year (FIL is huge fan), and Grier was the stick that stirred that offense and whole team.  He may not amount to be a starter, but his floor is way above the Tony Pikes, Stefan Lafors, Randy Fasani, etc.  And Jimmy Clausen IMO.  I never saw anything from him to justify the idea he could have been a franchise QB.

For our franchise to be 25 years old, we have drafted an incredibly few QB's high.  Kerry Collins and Cam Newton are the only 2 truly high draft picks.  Jimmy Clausen (2nd) and Chris Weinke (4th) are the only other comparably drafted QB's IMO.

I include Weinke in that even though he was a 4th rounder, which was probably due to the fact he was 28 as a rookie.  To me, Weinke is the best comp to Grier in Panthers history.  (Ironically, I think Jake Delhomme is the best comp for Josh Allen).

Also, I vehemently disagree with anyone who says we didn't need to draft a QB, and one relatively high at that.  The Panthers were the only team who hadn't drafted a QB since 2011, and backup QB was in desperate need of an upgrade.

Obviously if Cam goes down, our season probably does as well, but it's the GM's job to try to have a contingency plan no matter what.  You can't ask 100% from the other 52 guys if you just give up when your QB goes down.

So let me say this. Grier looks like everything is too fast for him right now.  Could that change?  Sure.

But my main question is did we keep the right backup QB last year?  We had Garrett Gilbert who looks damn good up there in Cleveland.  We could have had Allen and Gilbert and spent the 3rd round draft pick on another position.  Hell Heinicke can’t even see the field in preseason.  I don’t get keeping just because he knew the playbook a little better.  Where is judging these guys on the ceiling and potential.  That wasn’t done with Heinicke.

Just to be clear, we are upset that:

A) We drafted a QB too high this year (end of the 3rd round)

B) Said quarterback may not have the chops to become a franchise QB in this league

Do we see how those criticisms may be at odds with one another? Are we upset that we didn’t draft a future franchise QB in the 4th round or later? Just wanna make sure I got my facts straight. If so, I’d strongly advise we adjust our expectations.

Where are you getting that from? He has played one preseason game, with pretty mediocre results (14-22 135 yards).

    • this     I never cease to be amazed at the number of people who will run up their blood pressure to get to the grocery store 30 seconds faster or are racing to get to work like it won’t be there at 8:02.   The only thing I’ve ever done that I think added more years to my life besides quitting smoking, was to learn to go with the flow behind the wheel.
    • The term you're looking for is "malinger(ed)", and he didn't.  I'm not sure why Panthers fans act like jaded ex girlfriends.  The dude is clearly injury prone as his time in San Fransico also proves. It's not like he got to San Fran and stopped having problems.
    • My long and rambling post:   The guy is all heart, and I wouldn’t be surprised if he came back even better next year. He’s exactly the guy you lock up. The money won’t ever change the way he plays.  It was a big fumble, but what 1,000 yard back fumbles once in an entire season?  Pride. This team is FINALLY seeing guys who obviously take the game very seriously. Hunt, Chuba, Thielen, Brown, Horn (CB), Coker, Bryce (IMHO). Bye bye, Spider-Man. I don’t see these dudes being OK with teammates half-assing practice or in games. I can see Brown and Horn coming over to talk to somebody.  Good team? Ummm, maybe, but will still likely lose more close games than they win unless this last draft turns in to LOB part 2. That’s a stretch.  Pretty good/decent team. Yes. They finished the season as a pretty good team. I know I sound like a broken record harping back to it, but going in to ATL and putting a 40 burger on them en route to an OT win. A bad Panthers team would have had their brakes beaten off. We’ve seen it.  Rose colored glasses on and bonging a 40 of hopium: There are watershed moments that occur that change the course of franchises, both good and bad. If Fox doesn’t pull Rodney at halftime, the epic journey that was 2003 never happens. On the negative side, Cam taking that one hit from Watt was the end of any and all Panthers relevancy and we’ve been the biggest losers in all of pro sports as a result. Watershed moments. LOB draft. Vinny goes down and the goat is born.  Will the ATL game be the spark that this franchise has desperately needed? Could it be that they hit the mega million jackpot with Princley and Scourton as eat QBs for breakfast? Sure would be nice having 2 all-pro edge guys on the cheap for the next 4 years.  A lot of unknowns, but at least it actually feels  fun again.
