So let me say this. Grier looks like everything is too fast for him right now.  Could that change?  Sure.

But my main question is did we keep the right backup QB last year?  We had Garrett Gilbert who looks damn good up there in Cleveland.  We could have had Allen and Gilbert and spent the 3rd round draft pick on another position.  Hell Heinicke can’t even see the field in preseason.  I don’t get keeping just because he knew the playbook a little better.  Where is judging these guys on the ceiling and potential.  That wasn’t done with Heinicke.

Hindsight being 20/20, I think it's pretty obvious that we didn't keep the right backup last year. I'm just glad we were able to keep Allen on the PS. I thought both Allen and Gilbert looked better than Heinicke throughout the process, but I think two primary factors led to Heinicke being the guy. 1. Familiarity with Norv Turner (he was with Norv in Minnesota). 2. Better mobility.

I think there's virtually no chance we make that same mistake again this season and the writing seems to very much be on the wall for Heinicke. Sadly, he's just not an NFL QB talent.

You knew it was only a matter of time before recently-signed free safety Tre Boston was elevated to the first-string defense. It happened on Monday and Boston was very active and boisterous. After one play by a second-teamer in the end zone he shouted, ‘'Don't O around here.''

Place-kicker Graham Gano continued to rest his sore knee on Monday and Joey Slye continued to handle kicking for the Panthers. Slye converted all three field goal attempts in Thursday's win at Chicago and likely will handle all the kicking this week against Buffalo. But Gano, who missed four games last season with a sore knee, said he had a good day kicking off to the side on Sunday and doesn't anticipate the knee being an issue going into the season. He also likes having Slye around for rest and competition. “I love competition. It's always fun,'' Gano said. "I feel it brings out the best of you.''

Panthers coach Ron Rivera won't tolerate any fighting on Tuesday and Wednesday when his team holds a joint practice with the Buffalo Bills: “If anybody fights then we'll pull them out and throw them out of practice and they'll have to be disciplined. We're not here to fight. That's bullsh--. What we're here to do is learn from each other and help each other win. That's the most important opportunity to come out of this.''

Panthers' camp observations: 1. Free safety Tre Boston, working with the first-team for the first time, made a great play on a pass to wide receiver Curtis Samuel in the end zone at the end of a two-minute drive. Boston will make this defense better. 2. QB Cam Newton got the day off so he'll be ready for two padded practices against Buffalo on Tuesday and Wednesday. Kyle Allen took first-team snaps; 3. I swear that was LB Luke Kuechly almost strutting after a good defensive play; 4. DL Kawann Short was back on the field after a shot to the shin on Sunday, and RB Jordan Scarlett (back) returned; Panthers need to see what they have in him; 5. QB Will Grier continued with ups and downs, throwing a pick on one play and a touchdown on the next. Needs more consistency to surpass Allen for No. 2.

In fairness Mahomes was the 10th pick overall, and Grier was the 100th.  Grier was drafted to be a quality backup with the hope he could have some additional upside to becoming a starter.

I watched almost every WVU game last year (FIL is huge fan), and Grier was the stick that stirred that offense and whole team.  He may not amount to be a starter, but his floor is way above the Tony Pikes, Stefan Lafors, Randy Fasani, etc.  And Jimmy Clausen IMO.  I never saw anything from him to justify the idea he could have been a franchise QB.

For our franchise to be 25 years old, we have drafted an incredibly few QB's high.  Kerry Collins and Cam Newton are the only 2 truly high draft picks.  Jimmy Clausen (2nd) and Chris Weinke (4th) are the only other comparably drafted QB's IMO.

I include Weinke in that even though he was a 4th rounder, which was probably due to the fact he was 28 as a rookie.  To me, Weinke is the best comp to Grier in Panthers history.  (Ironically, I think Jake Delhomme is the best comp for Josh Allen).

Also, I vehemently disagree with anyone who says we didn't need to draft a QB, and one relatively high at that.  The Panthers were the only team who hadn't drafted a QB since 2011, and backup QB was in desperate need of an upgrade.

Obviously if Cam goes down, our season probably does as well, but it's the GM's job to try to have a contingency plan no matter what.  You can't ask 100% from the other 52 guys if you just give up when your QB goes down.

You're a good poster and I like your opinions but we didn't need to draft a QB. Allen is doing well and show a lot of confidence.  Grier will probably find that confidence soon but I'm not sold that he'll be better than Allen other than draft position.

If Cam is injured again Allen will produce as many wins as Grier.

Just to be clear, we are upset that:

A) We drafted a QB too high this year (end of the 3rd round)

B) Said quarterback may not have the chops to become a franchise QB in this league

Do we see how those criticisms may be at odds with one another? Are we upset that we didn’t draft a future franchise QB in the 4th round or later? Just wanna make sure I got my facts straight. If so, I’d strongly advise we adjust our expectations.

Come in mayne, you don’t see the writing on the wall? After 2 weeks of camp and one preseason game, Grier has bust written all over him.

I think Grier has more upside than Allen but he also has a bunch more work. He's a Scott Turner project for sure and will really test if coaching can overcome poor mechanics. Timimg and QB IQ will come with practice.

I don't blame our staff and front office for not being willing to go all in on Allen as the backup after one good performance in a throwaway game in week 17. I mean, we kept him on the practice squad behind Heinicke until Heinicke got hurt. It's not like we ever had much confidence in him last season.
