Rodrigue discusses the Gano decision

Mr. Scot

Via the Athletic...

Quoting Marty Hurney, Rodrigue said the issue came down to a fear that if they devoted a roster spot to Gano, they might lose someone else they really wanted to keep.

Rodrigue also cited Hurney regarding Torrey Smith's release, saying that it had to do with special teams (i.e. Smith isn't on them and they needed the slot for someone who was).

Also of note, per a source the team might give Reggie Bonnafon some return reps.

Chris Hogan and Torrey Smith were essentially going for the same roster spot. Hogan not only returns punts but I also saw him make tackles on special teams. Plus he will probably play in every game this season. It was a no brainer. Bring back Torrey as a coach if he meant that much to the young guys

Said this earlier in preseason when it was clear Gano couldn't set foot on the field without pain in the knee.

It was just plain common sense at the time, and even moreso now that we have a clear picture of the roster.

I've seen this a few times but I can't find any example of Hogan returning punts in a game. Just a few mentions of him doing it in practice. It doesn't even seem worth mentioning in relation to his roster spot.

Seems like he beat out Torrey Smith purely as a receiver.

Of course Hurney would say it was about that and not the fact Torrey Smith was the odd man out when it came to cap space.

Special Teams is not just returning kicks.  He probably made an impact in coverage, where Smith might not have done well
