Tepper asking the city of Charlotte to pay for MLS stadium

Yeah like one Super Bowl and maybe 1-2 Final Fours, which an infinitesimal amount of local residents would attend.  Billy Joel is coming to BOA next year.  Hell Kenny Chesney played in podunk Green Bay in Lambeau Field, originally built in the 50s.  A new stadium = gluttonous insanity.

I get Tepper wanting a roof. I get the city offering him something on that due to the revenue events like that would generate for the city. The number Tepper would want and the number I would be willing to offer would likely exist in different universes though.

It has been proven by economic studies that pumping hundreds of millions of dollars into stadiums is a terrible investment for cities.

New stadiums aren’t designed for the purpose of the things that you stated.

New stadiums are designed for the purpose of generating millions more $$$ into the owners accounts than old stadiums.

And thats all you really need to know.

Tepper is smart. All he has to do is say this. Do you want the Panthers to play here or in SC?  Either you're going to build one or I'm taking the new Panthers stadium over the border. Done.

Even if he pays for it himself, they’d play in a stadium far more empty that the one built relatively recently in Santa Clara for the 49ers?  <—-disaster.  The VAST majority of current PSL owners won’t cross the line or pony up to support the hypothetical gluttonous insanity.

Meh. Might as well ask. I mean look at Foxconn in Wisconsin. (Before moving to Vermont, I lived in that area so I got really familiar with the deal.)

Best case for the one asking, the city (county, state, etc...) covers a huge amount of the cost, worst case, one can get what would amount to a several year, no interest loan worth hundreds of millions.

Why not try to make that happen?

Like hell it would.  The Bears and Chicago Fire play in Soldier Field, originally built in 1924.  Building a $2 billion stadium would create a fierce backlash among Panther fans, utterly enraging taxpayers and PSL owners losing their investments.

Meant that as that's what Tepper is probably angling at.

That's assumptive.  The truth is for every Charlotte PSL holder lost an SC PSL holder would be gained.

A very risky bet for a relatively young franchise without generations of fans-counting on a “poorer”, less populated state (overall) that cares more about college football.

Those are all assumptions bud.  You think if they built a brand new stadium 15 mins from uptown Charlotte thats pretty much its own town with the lightrail extended no one would go? Hell people in south Charlotte drive to SC for gas.

What is NOT an assumption is that the VAST majority of PSL owners that have pumped tens or perhaps even hundreds of thousands of dollars into their PSLs themselves and tickets since 1996 will NOT pony up again for new/different/unknown seats-and may even turn their TVs off and take a nap on Sunday afternoons.
