Yes draft round doesnt matter but the thing is Rivera is known for being such a Defensive guru he should have been able to do more with less in the past, the defense has only been really good when its stacked like this,  youth has helped too.

We were the #2 defense in 2013 with a badass defensive line where the only 1st rounder was Star with 2 undrafted guys getting a lot of reps (Mario Addison & Wes Horton).

On top of that, we started 2 UDFA rookies for a lot of the year (Melvin White & Robert Lester).

People trying to discount Ron of defense are reaching...  He's made chicken salad out of chickensh*t more times than not.

Question his clock management our overall offensive philosophy, sure, but give the man his due on defense.

We had Short that year too.

Sure, but there is this--of the (approx) 25 defensive players on the active roster:

First round picks (8): Luke, Shaq, Vernon, McCoy, Irvin, Reid, Burns, Poe

On defense, a third of the roster is comprised on first round draft choices.

I am not saying that RR is not doing a good job, but damn--our defense is an all-star team.  Throw in the second rounders, and you get 11 players that were first or second round selections.

Second rounders (3):  Jackson, KK Short, Bradberry

Meanwhile, on offense, we have (currently):

First rounders (3):   Olsen, Moore, CMC (Cam not playing at moment)

Second rounders (3):  Samuel, Moton, Little

The offensive line:  We have 2 undrafted starters on the OL; our current QB was undrafted.

The offense is currently starting as many undrafted players as it is first rounders.

If you gave a coordinator a MLB like Luke calling the shots and 11 elite draft picks---then you should be good.

Sooo...you're saying Ron gets no credit for scheme, alignments, etc.?

I see your point, but the recent success isn't just about the individual parts, is it?

Don't know that first and second rounders are the telling tale given how many first and second rounders don't pan out. You could argue that Butler and Poe aren't great and guys like McCoy and Irvin are getting long in the tooth and were free agents for a reason. Even Shaq was a question mark until this year.  So the whole notion Rivera has the benefit of all this talent might be a little overblown.

Ron has only fielded a top 10 defense (front 7/secondary) like once. His Front 7 has just about always been in the top rankings since 2013 though, I’ll give you that.

Ehhh 2013, 2015, 2017

2017 was ranked #11

So more like around 3...

but yea otherwise the defense usually ranks bottom 3rd of league. So over his tenure he’s fielded an average defense as a whole.

Actually using ypg  surrendered as your standard his defense have been ranked:

2011- 28th

2012 - 10th

2013- 2nd

2014- 10th

2015- 6th

2016- 15th

2017- 7th

2018- 15th

That is five times in top 10 and 2 more in the top 15th.  Not sure what you are using but the NFL standard has always been ranked by total yards surrendered.

    • We need a Sam Off Ball Backer to pair with Lloyd. Lloyd is a strong Interior Will especially in Pass Coverage- but that is also Trevin Wallace’s archetype. Need a Rozeboom style run stopper. Rodriguez and Allen fit that
    • There aren’t that many ways to screw Day 2 up.  That’d be them making an obvious reach, or selecting at one of the few positions that we are pretty solid at. Because as excited as we are for the growth and improvement this team is showing, it’s still not an overly talented or deep roster. Honestly, there aren’t really many positions I’d feel bad about. Feelings about Bryce aside (because we are not going to select a QB), it’s really RB (bad positional value) and that’s it. I guess OT too since we grabbed Freeling in Round 1.    While not as high on my wish list as other spots, you can justify WR or TE.     Interior offensive lineman who would likely take over an interior spot either this year (at center) or guard (next for cap casualty of Hunt or Lewis)? Fine by me.   Dlineman? Yes, that’s a highly rotational position and we have zero quality depth.    ILB? Yep, could stand for an upgrade over Wallace.    EDGE? Absolutely wouldn’t hate another option to spell Phillips, Scourton, and Princely.    FS?  Would love to add better coverage skill set to the backend of the defense. Moehrig and Ransom are great in run support but not as good deep. Adding a more traditional FS would allow us to mix and match/run some 3 safety sub packages and or a big nickel type look with a SS down near the line for better run support in possible pass downs.    CB? Could stand to get better at nickel.
    • Sounds like Veesaar is entering the draft. He could always test the waters and pull out and return but without him our big men look like a serious liability. Better do something in the portal. If they don't do something about this portal madness my days as a college sports fan are probably numbered. This bullshit of having a nearly entirely new team every season is gonna get old fast.
