Not signing him to a huge long-term deal? Absolutely.

Yanking the tag after primary free agency forcing us to just spam picks at CBs just to field a (still terrible) secondary? Absolutely not.

Yanking the tag wasn’t even a big deal either, Josh’s first agent was going to cause a huge distraction and he was going to have Josh holdout without an extension. I’m completely fine with that.

Responding the way he did in the draft by going 3 straight CBS was retarded, especially since Worley and Sanchez were absolutely useless, but that’s a separate mistake. Would’ve been better off just going BPA still and sucking at CB but possibly having some other good players at other positions still around.

We lucked out on Bradberry in the long term, and Hurney did a great job getting us Donte and Cockrell.

Players do this posturing with the tag quote often. They almost always end up signing the tag and Norman admitted that's what was going to happen in this case too. Norman's agent overplayed his hand and Gettleman's ego made him pull a dumb power move.

Yanking the tag out from under Norman caused a much bigger distraction in the locker room than any other scenario would have in that situation.

You can argue it was a bad move if you thought we were still in win now mode that season for not keeping him then but rescinding the tag did absolutely nothing at all to distract or disrupt the locker room, and there was never any report or evidence that it did. You’re probably right that Josh would’ve eventually showed up, but DG decided to not let it go any further. I’m hindsight it probably didn’t matter either way. The cap space we cleared up was crucial in signing KK which after 2015 was a big deal, obviously now that doesn’t look so important with him struggling and injured now, but keeping Josh that year and letting him walk after that wouldn’t have really changed anything...

You're kidding yourself if you think watching a teammate earn a big raise, then get denied a true free agency opportunity via the tag then have that tag later rescinded had no impact on the locker room.

You don't have to read too far in between the lines with what guys like Olsen and TD had to say to see it.

https://www.panthers.com/news/panthers-react-to-norman-s-departure-17061002

Olsen:

"Obviously it came as a surprise to everybody. I don’t think it’s what anyone set out to have happen through the course of the offseason."

"I don’t think anyone would sit here and say you want to lose good players, you want to lose guys that are some of the best in the league at what they do."

TD:

"It was disappointing, knowing that we couldn't get something worked out with one of our best players on defense."

They both put a positive team spin on it, but it was obvious at the time everyone in the locker room was shocked by that move and knew that it flew in the face of putting our best team on the field that season.

As far as KK goes... honestly, in hindsight I wish we had let him walk.

So becoming the highest paid CB at the time denied him a “true free agency opportunity?”
