In ron's defense, that was the first time he's played against kyle shanahan's offense

Luke Kuechly has made a couple of nice picks against Shanahan, but he struggles against their run scheme. It’s not entirely his fault, but he deserves some of the blame for yesterday. He was getting washed up in the mix quite a bit. I love Shaq Thompson, I think he’s had a great season, but he looked like a guy playing with a heavy heart yesterday. He’d probably tell you that’s bullshit, maybe it is. But I’m telling you, he didn’t look right.

the good 0 coordinators make luke look like that all the time.   they just change things up and take the play to the opposite field and luke is where the play would have gone the week before.  payton's been doing this to him regularly.   mcvay did it to him this year, and shannahan did it to him in atlanta.  seems like luke would have caught on by now.   and shaq, good gravy that was just bad.   he was literally all alone in the cutback lanes and vacating them.

Sadly, it's a pretty valid point.

Said it elsewhere. Rivera can be good, but not great. At this point, he's kind of like that comfortable outfit you refuse to throw out despite the fact it's got a dozen holes in it.

I know we're going to get the standard "we could do much worse" response from some, but that's just not a good enough reason to keep a coach that's clearly hit his ceiling.

And the reality is that we could also do a lot better.

Better than switching to a new outfit that seems quality, but tips down the inseam on your way to a closing meeting for a $25 mm deal.

Rivera isn't cutting it, dude.

Right now, I still feel like we're in the Jerry Richardson era. And until we clean house, we're gonna stay there.

I'm very much ready for a new start.

I said this back in December: He’s been here for almost a decade. Sometimes, it’s just time to move the hell on. It doesn’t mean you have to hate on the guy, and he’s made some positive contributions. But they had their chance last year to hit the reset button.

That may have been a timing issue as much as anything. Maybe who he wants wasn’t available at the moment. I still have to believe that there are certain people Tepper wants to get in the building before he pulls the trigger, if he’s even thinking about pulling the trigger.

Maybe he’s just sitting on this investment enjoying it, who knows. It’s way too early to tell what kind of owner he’s going to be long-term. Everybody I’ve talked to tells me he’s fairly involved.

Days like yesterday really make me feel that a change needs to happen at some point. And I’m not a prisoner of the moment, but we’ve seen this two years in a row now. This loss in particular was extremely demoralizing, and you can’t hide behind the quarterback situation in explaining it. It was an absolute crap fest defensively.

Now if he goes on to win the Super Bowl this year? Sure, you can reconsider that stance. But teams that play the way they did yesterday, giving up 51 points on 38 rush attempts, typically don’t make it past 7-9.

I definitely don't hate Rivera. Heck, I cheer for him. He's as nice a guy as we've ever had.

But the team doesn't exist for the purpose of paying nice guys.

It's time to clean house and start a new era.

This.

Unlike many people on this board I’ve had the chance to meet Rivera in person in a context outside football. I had the pleasure of waiting on his family for the occasion of his 50th birthday. I waited on Ron and Stephanie on the day the Greg Hardy scandal broke, obviously a trying day for him, and he was nothing but gracious after a long day.

But there is a difference between liking someone personally and thinking they are the right person to lead your organization. I think that Ron tried to grow and adapt when he went through his Riverboat phase, took chances outside his comfort zone and sought council from those who had been there. But I think that what we are seeing is that he was unable to make those changes to his identity as a coach permanent, and over time slipped back to a conservative comfort zone unable to adapt to new and innovative   concepts.

I think what we have now is a coach who is able to inspire loyalty in his players but not hold them accountable in ways that matter. I despise Bellicheck but his players know that if they do not get it done they are gone. I think that’s a core reason you never see failures like what we witnesssed yesterday with the Patriots.
