Greg Cosell talks Titans vs Panthers

One thing Cosell didn’t say: this needed to be a ball control, low-scoring game for Carolina to win. It was the formula we talked about all week, and within the first 20 minutes, the game was over. And a lot of that is on Kyle. But a lot of that is on the defense, too. It’s OK to assign credit or blame to multiple areas. It’s called nuance.

It's exactly what SHOULD happen when a really good defense gets a big lead.  I honestly blame our defense far more for this loss than our offense.  There is no excuse for giving up 51 points, ever.  A good defense doesn't allow an opponent to go 11/75/TD and 6/75/TD in the first quarter.

I’m still fine with where we are.  Needed to split SF/GB.  Need to win this week.   Think we can do both.

We are a better team than Tenn and it is at home.  We historically do well vs Rodgers and he plays into what we do well

We historically do well against Rodgers / McCarthy.

We haven't seen Rodgers / LaFleur yet.

It’s more than likely gonna be a cold game in Green Bay. I know the day before is a high of 30 and a low of 20. Something to think about as well. I’m not sure if that helps us or not. I’m guessing Rodgers is immune to cold weather at this point. But it might help our defense nonetheless.

Offense still goes through Rodgers just like before.   Just less of a headache for Rodgers since this dude is so green IMO.  Which is why Aaron is happier.  Easier for Aaron to get his way.

If the Panthers lose to the Titans, there might be only 2-3 more wins on the schedule this year. 7-9 is a likely finish.

At home against Washington and Atlanta should be wins. If they aren't, Ron Rivera should be thrown out the door immediately. There's probably another win or two on the schedule somewhere...one of them probably @ Atlanta. But I'm not even confident the Panthers could win that game since they haven't won in Atlanta since 2014, coincidently another season the Falcons were about to fire their head coach.

The rest of the games are against very good teams with winning records.

Let’s just assume Kyle doesn’t throw three interceptions. Let’s just assume that.

Let’s also assume those three interceptions don’t lead to points.

You’d still be left with a 30 points allowed by the defense.

That’s not good enough against San Francisco. It’s a very crafty offense, but they’re not that prolific. They averaged 20 points a game in  the three games prior to Carolina, (14.5 points per game in the two games before Carolina)

My biggest question about San Francisco would be how the Redskins did what they did defensively. And I don't believe the weather conditions alone are enough to explain it.

I do know Greg Manusky is a decent to good defensive coordinator. I'm also pretty sure he used to work for the 49ers, though not under the current regime

Yep. I would assume nothing about these division games. Even with as bad as Atlanta has been, I would still be concerned. The one thing going for Carolina in that matchup is Atlanta is 32nd the league in rush attempts.

On that note: I would pay attention to the schedule and look at teams that have a commitment to the running game. Those are teams to look out for. Teams that tend to ignore the running game a bit, Carolina can get after them.

It’s not an “easy” schedule by any means.

You also kinda have to account for teams making adjustments.

Any team that watched that game this past Sunday is going to be looking hard at what worked so well against us.

(teams that have a competent coaching staff, at least)

You still have to be able to execute, but the blueprint is there.

I also expect the defensive strategy to remain "stop McCaffrey" regardless of who's at quarterback.

The Redskins were more fundamentally sound. The weather did play a factor there, but not as much as people think. Those two teams play the same style of football, so it was going to be low scoring. Washington did a good job in two areas: red zone defense (0/4 red zone, 0/1 goal to go) and not giving up as many explosive plays. Carolina was woeful in both areas on Sunday.
