Cam Newton out several more weeks. IR possible.

Apparently the doctor visit wasn't "to be cleared to play", that was wishful thinking.

Cam Newton is reportedly out several more weeks at least, and now IR is on the table.

From NFL.com...

Carolina Panthers quarterback Cam Newton will use the weekend to consider his options on how to proceed with his plan for recovery following a visit to noted foot and ankle expert Dr. Robert Anderson in Green Bay.

While Newton has been frustrated with how long his Lisfranc injury is taking to heal, surgery was not recommended and is not currently in the plans, sources say. The hope is that more rest will allow the injury to heal without having a procedure that would knock him out months.

While there is no timetable for recovery, Newton is expected to be sidelined several weeks and potentially more. As the Panthers enter Week 9 -- with Kyle Allen starting against the Titans on Sunday -- time is running out for the former league MVP.

That brings Newton to his decision, one that he's weighing after returning home from seeing Anderson, the former assistant team physician.

Being placed on Injured Reserve is on the table for Newton, sources say.

The reason is simply the timing. If he's out more than a month and heals perfectly during that time, is a December return to the field realistic? Maybe not.

Despite being injured in Week 2, Newton still has not healed enough to be able to practice with his teammates. At most, he's worked off to the side doing rehab.

"He's going up and probably seeing one of the best foot doctors," head coach Ron Rivera said Friday before the visit, "and whatever we get from the doctor, I think will probably really impact the decisions going forward."

Even if he doesn't play this year and heals up for next year, I think the Panthers let him play out his next year. If he's back to form they pay up, if not, he was only $21 mil for 2020. It's worth the gamble. They will not give him a long term deal just yet. I hope he comes back and has a great year, Good for him and everyone that way.

I am afraid it is how quick his body is breaking down. Three serious injuries in the last three years does not bode well for his extension. I’m not sure when we could see a fully healthy Cam.

They might as well IR him and let him get to 100% before next year .  He still has a year left on his contract in 2020. Let him play the final year of his contract and make a big QB decision after that season.

With all the injuries he's had post 2015, they aren't handing him a contract unless he can prove he can stay healthy for a full season again I'd think. They'll give him the reigns in 2020 and that is pretty much put up or shut up time for Cam. If he can't stay healthy next year or his performance doesn't return to early 2018 level, then I could see him going to free agency or retiring depending on how he's feeling by the end of next season.

Welp.. Ron and Marty got their excuse to stick around another year. Hopefully Tepper won't buy it

Let’s hope not. The one thing positive that can come out of this is  a coaching change.  After last week I am fully convinced that RR just can’t get us to the promised land.

    • I could be waaaaaaay off about Kon. I do fault myself into, to borrow a NFL phrase heavily "RAS" nerd on players, too much. There are PLENTY of athletic freak shows that are playing overseas(or Amazon delivery) cause they never figured out NBA ball. I can easily miss seeing the talent. Plus did he only have 2 dunks on the season??(is that for real??) I didn't watch over a few hours of duke, but not one point did I think "That Kon guy is a top 4 pick in the upcoming draft". IMO I still foresee Ball bringing the ball up, doing his weak isolation game and never even looking for Kon. That's his best trait according to everyone, shooting right? I do not see ball, bridges, miller or even williams making the extra pass to Kon for him to shoot a 3.  Then defense-wise, Im not ready to type the amount of questions I foresee in his ability for guarding NBA SGs or bench SFs for that matter. Not that NBA players care to defend, but still..... I just feel he's a bad fit for the current hornets, trades are taking place tho... Liam to me is a decent comp for Kon and he fell some, but was a 29 overall pick. Still around 13-21 was the good solid range for Liam and I thought the same for Kon. This is just a classic case of I need to see it. It add to this, Kon is like garlic. Ball is like sugar and Miller is like flour. Mix it together and chef Lee is not going to get me to eat that dish..... Honestly I don't know why Im this vocal about Kon. In past years I would be patience and not post and see what the kid has. The other side, insert classic white boy terms here- _____, ______, _______< etc >. Hornets do desperately need them. His crafty back door cuts, his willingness to stay a extra 2 hours to refine lees plays, keep playing with bruised limbs. I heard from many reports he's mentally tough and hornets by all gods need that. God they are such pussys.  I hope Im wrong and if so, I will give Kon his just props.
