Defending Rivera

Mr. Scot

Recommended Posts

Rivera's only problem is not being an arshole. If he was he'd scare the backups into playing non-backup football. The ONLY NFL team that can consistently overcome injuries to starters is New England and even they can't get but so far.

No coach is any good without their best players playing.

Not a Rivera problem.

I know it was reported and I can see it in Tepper.  But I don’t think it’s productive for an owner to freak out week to week in the nfl.

the nfl is a business but running an nfl team from a football stand point is not like running a typical business.

I doubt that Tepper “freaks out” on a weekly basis. Pretty sure he knew when he bought the team that there would be highs and lows. Also pretty sure that he can handle the losing, but maybe not the blowout variety so well... and he has a right to.

Rivera has plenty of problems. He implemented a hybrid 4-3 and it looks terrible. He kept his DC, didn't hire someone to competently run that unit with the scheme transition which he has to do and he hasn't adjusted the failed defensive scheme because he is the effective DC. We are losing close games because of Rivera and his decisions, the injuries just make it that much more difficult to overcome.

Nice guy but I can't wait to play against him. As time goes on, he grows more outdated and archaic. He will be a boon for a franchise trying to try it around. Kinda like Fox.

Most wins as a coach in Panthers history

three straight division titles

2x COTY

players continue to play hard for him and never have a bad thing to say about him

Has had multiple defenses ranked in the top 10

This isn’t an endorsement for Ron, just thought I’d highlight some of the positives. I like the guy as a person, but I think maybe it’s time to move on. The same issues he had in year one he still has today.

Actually a very good coach. Players would run through brick walls for the guy. We bag on him but has the guy ever had a year without key starters going down on both lines, or QB. Wrong time to go to 3-4 especially without KK. Have we seen him with a healthy roster? Not since 15-1. Him and Marty are doing a great job duct taping this thing to hold together. Best staff on paper we've ever had but this particular group has only had two injury riddled years to put it together and they added a head coach candidate in Perry Fewell to coach the DBs. I know you guys want wins or else you almost have to look at it as a show and not real life because the NFL doesn't "favor" your team. Cams head knows that first hand and yes he may get those calls in Chicago. He knows it and I know it. Sad, but that's MOST teams in the NFL. They're not "favored". Ron isn't at the top of the list on this not winning thing. Washington Generals.

What separates great NFL coaches from good ones is their ability to steal a win, especially in a big game.  Belichick wasn’t always the Belichick everybody loves/hates.  He became that by posting wins in a few big games where people walked away saying “what a great game plan.”  It is not just the plan, it is getting his players to execute it, which usually means the plan was formulated with their strengths in mind.

Rivera is much more of a “line up our guys against their guys and just try to inflict our will on them” guy.  That’s great if the opponent is the Bengals, Jets, or Dolphins and even then, it is not fool proof.  Sometimes it works against the right quality opponent.  For example, he always seems to fair well against New England, but in this article, he credits focusing on the things you would expect him to focus on (getting ahead, forcing them to abandon the run, pressuring Brady).

He’s held the wheels on this team so far this year under a situation that almost all of us would have predicted a complete crater after week two.  Not unlike Fox, Rivera brings stability.

But, I don’t think he is the guy who is going to steal wins.  He isn’t likely to be the guy who finds that wrinkle in a game plan that they ride to victory.  We don’t enter big games wondering “what is he going to come up with today?”  Neither do our opponents.

I think he is a good but not great HC, perhaps passed by the way the game has evolved, and his approach may be worn out here.  Nine years is an eternity as a NFL HC with one team.  Walsh lasted ten with the 49ers before hanging it up.  Parcells only eight with the Giants.  Gibbs lasted 12 in his first stint with the Redskins.  The Don Shulas, Bill Belichicks, and Chuck Knolls of the world are pretty rare.

The officials changed the momentum of the game when the Panthers seemed to gain the upper hand. Had it been fair we'd have had that safety 2pts and that ball back with good field position. They didn't want the Panthers to pull away and "win". The announcers and America can't deny it. At least we get to "win" sometimes and go to the Super Bowl.

Year after year Seattle contends...no matter what

last year, Seattle totally gutted their defense and then was not afraid to upgrade with a trade

they make the right draft choices for their system and trade for young  players to improve it

they get rid of old players

they are similar to the Patriots  smart organization

then we have Ron

    • Here in lies the rub that the supporting posters continue to ignore. He wasn’t a 2nd round pick in the 2025 class, especially with an ACL tear. It was a dumb pick for any GM who looks ahead to determine values. C and CB were much better values than an injured RB in 2024. If a RB isn’t even playing much in 2024, you have to compare him to 2025. We’re beating a dead horse but only because the defense of the pick is almost comical at this point. We’ve made a ton of poo picks and moves/non trades while Morgan was GM and the assistant GM. It happens, we don’t have to jump through hoops to act like we just had some really bad luck. The 2025 draft class is unknown so far but damn it felt way better afterwards for the first time in a long time. Embrace the potential and stop stamping guaranteed on the box of poo of the 2018-2024 drafts. We are were we aware because of them and 2025 has to hit so we can get past the 7 win max in 7 year hurdle.
    • Oh for those tired of the Mannings I have bad news, Peytons son Marshal already has college teams after him and he isn't even in HS until this fall...   I'd wager we have two Mannings in the NFL in 2030
