The Panthers are expected to retain Marty Hurney as GM after firing coach Ron Rivera on Tuesday.

"We are going to take a comprehensive and thorough review of our football operation to make sure we are structured for long-term sustained success," owner David Tepper said in a statement. "Our vision is to find the right mix of old-school discipline and toughness with modern and innovative processes." In the midst of one of the more surprising second acts in recent NFL history, Hurney is about as old school as it gets but has done a decent job in his second go-round as Panthers GM. Tepper has made it clear he will be heavily involved in the team's coaching search and is seemingly likely to rely more on his own opinion than Hurney's. It is still quite possible Hurney is sent packing at season's end.

I speculated a few days ago that Tepper wanted a figure-head as he transitions into his new career as Owner/GM.

Nothing has disabused me of my fantastic notion yet, which is scary.

I told yall that Tepper liked Hurney and he would likely stay as gm and help in coaching search. Adding a assistant gm and director is interesting tho.

There are a load of possibilities here.

- Hurney stays for now but is on probation (Gantt's take)

- Hurney stays but the new VP is given final say on the roster.

- Hurney gets the new VP job as a consultant type and someone else takes over the GM duties.

- Hurney is only still in place until Marty Hurney has a final conversation with him.

- Hurney stays only until Kevin Colbert's status in Pittsburgh is settled and then we see what happens.

I'd RATHER have another GM but if we can put a lot of other good people around him, maybe it could work. Everyone seems to think Marty is malleable. Could be that is why Tepper wants to keep him too.

He needs to be a 100% GM or a 0% GM.

Retaining a guy as a "partial" GM is idiocy.
