i agree with this

since this is your position as well, I must be way, way wrong

I admire the skill and ability of the athletes. Soccer is big business overseas. What I don’t like are the politics involved and horrible officiating during the World Cup and I can not stand the flopping and theatrics of players trying to sell a red card. I also don’t care for the racism. I doubt that last part bothers you though.

I like Charlotte Athletic, Monarchs are ok but I think we had a WNBA team with that at one point?

biggest thing is with soccer that’s different with football, you typically don’t have “mascots” following the location. Hence the FC (futbol club) etc. it’s why you see FC or United etc the location compared to “Carolina Panthers”

Although Atlanta is “United” they typically have used this when two “clubs” united in the past to create one new “club” hence united. MLS in their early years just used this to try and be like the EPL (DC United) etc. and they have said they won’t allow another united team name again due to the lack of history of clubs merging etc.

I’m personally really excited and part of the Mint City Collective (quick shoutout) as a supporter group for this team. We have over 500+ members now and have some pretty cool stuff planned. I’ve lived in Charlotte since ‘92 and was born in Greensboro in ‘88 and grew up playing soccer. I’m ok with the large amount of money going towards this as the other poster said that East Charlotte took a huge hit with Eastland mall closing. I can already see the area changing once the team HQ and practice fields are built. From what I’ve heard it could be more surrounding it to help “stimulate” the area. With Charlotte giving the money that pretty much confirms a team name that’s “charlotte” compared to carolina.

good post overall, but the "united" thing is a myth. the vast majority of clubs with that name were not formed from any kind of a merger. in almost all cases, the name was simply adopted on the basis that it sounds cool. it's like the "wanderers" myth.

Wasn’t Newcastle a merger? I agree most were just adopted but mls wants to separate the it self and try to be its own league compared to copying epl etc

Which teams are examples or not being a merger?

Oh greattttt here comes the soccer pansies to defend their sport. Soccer is for three types of people: uncircumcised euros, little kids, and terrorists.

Nobody has to defend soccer as a sport. Despite your ignorant redneck comments, it stands on its own as the most popular in the world.

Why not Queen City FC?

I'm convinced that Charlotte sports teams avoid it on some 4th grader masculinity BS. Only way I can explain the Hornets having a dozen City Edition jerseys and no "Queen City" to be found.

Shame because QCFC is awesome.
