Did this guy wear #1 at Clemson?  I remember them having a super soft safety a few years ago.

Nah, I remember him. He definitely didn't play soft. He played recklessly and that recklessness honestly too often crossed over into borderline if not outright dirty territory. The only reason I remember him is because of the 2016 ACC championship game against UNC. He got flagged right out of the gate for a blatant late hit out of bounds and later got tossed for a targeting penalty.

Good, because I distinctly remember them having a safety that was the 'last guy on the pile' kind of tackler.

This was the late hit OB

Keep in mind, that QB (Marquis Williams) ran a 4.81 at the UNC pro day and still got around the corner on a 4.3 T.J. Green. Not good.

That type of stuff was pretty typical of him. Like I said, he played recklessly. He'd be way over-aggressive and get out of position or take a bad angle and then compound the mistake by doing something stupid.

Not the same guy, but definitely the same time period.  Look at the bottom of the screen at the beginning of the clip.  See who is trailing the play?  Yup, #1, that was the guy I was talking about.

Edit: Mystery solved, his name is Jayron Kearse and plays for the Vikings now.

I'm afraid to, now.

His first snap came at 6:29 left in the 4th, on the bottom of the screen each snap.

  • Snap #1: beat by Marcus Johnson on a dig for 18 yards
  • Snap #2: beat by Johnson again on a 9-route up the sideline and would've been a 46-yd TD had Brissett not overthrown him
  • Snap #3: not targeted, but was beaten on a short curl
  • Snap #4: beat by T.Y. Hilton on another dig, incomplete but miraculously not called for DPI as he got there very early but the ball was a bit uncatchable since Brissett was on the move
  • Snap #5: not targeted, but had decent coverage on a 9 thanks to his recovery speed after losing positioning originally
  • Snap #6: beaten by Hilton on a short curl for 9 yards (same exact play from Snap #3, which was also caught by Hilton, they just moved him to the single side that Green was on)
  • Snap #7: run play
  • Snap #8: not targeted, but beaten on another short curl and aggressively challenges to jump it
  • Snap #9: not targeted, but his WR breaks free momentarily on a possible OPI
  • Snap #10: run play, TD

They were definitely going after him and were getting success: 4 targets, 2 receptions for 27 yards and would've had a big TD if Brissett connected on it.

However we were playing him at CB, maybe he's slightly better at safety.
