Grier's performance

I thought the exact opposite.

Dude looked like Jimmy Clausen 2.0 out there.

Say what you want about Kyle Allen, the guy could at least get the ball towards his WRs.

Quote

Grier targeted Christian McCaffrey 15 times. He caught all 15 passes, setting a franchise record for most receptions in a game. Of Grier’s 224 passing yards, 119 went to McCaffrey. When targeting anyone other than McCaffrey, Grier went 12-for-29 for 105 yards and three interceptions.

That's some Clausen ball.

Ouch. That's pretty rough. I didn't realize he was quite THAT bad when throwing to non-CMC targets.

Looking even deeper, he was 5/8 for 49 yards when throwing to TEs. So going by your numbers that leaves him 7/21 for 56 yards when throwing to WRs. OUCH.

Yeah, I thought he was better than expected, but still pretty bad lol.

His composure, pocket awareness, ability to extend plays, and zip and touch on the ball in the short game were all much better than Allen's.  His deep ball was pretty horrible.

I've seen a lot of people talk about his lack of arm strength, even in his scouting reports from college...  I've always said there are two kinds of arm strength - ball speed/zip and ability to throw deep, the latter being what most people correlate with arm strength.  Grier has good zip, but his deep ball is fairly unimpressive.  Even with that being said, it's stronger than Allen's and at least he is willing to try.

I say all this to say, today was tough to evaluate overall bc of the loss of DJ early and no blocking...  but that being considered, I feel like Grier is worth keeping and seeing what he develops into regardless of Cam's situation (but, please, please, please come back Cam).  Kyle Allen shouldn't be on the roster next season.

Kyle Allen is not the second coming of our franchise QB by any stretch of the imagination. But the dude made big league throws every single game. Deep outs based on timing, placing numerous balls where they needed to be in order to get the completion. He's super green, and he tried to play hero ball without a hero's arm strength. Those are his issues. Kyle Allen has a future as a backup QB in the NFL.

Grier looked like he didn't even belong on the field today. He missed wide open intermediate passes that weren't even in the same zip code as his target. He processed everything ridiculously slowly and looked lost out there.

If we're keeping one of the two, I want Allen.

When you watch a QB drop back to throw and the DT is dropping back with him, I'm not sure there is any hope regardless of who is taking the snaps.

I don't feel like I know any more about Grier than I did a week ago.  That's okay, since that is what I expected at this point from a single start.  At this point putting him in there was really the equivalent of stacking the deck chairs on the Titanic.

Kyle Allen looked like a more competent back-up than Will Grier did.

So it’s smarter to feed Brandon Zylstra and DeAndrew White than Christian McCaffrey? Wow, you’re a lot less knowledgeable about football than the average fan, but keep trying to learn, I guess.

Allen was great at fumbling every time he was touched and he had great touch on passes to safeties and corners. He also was great at the whole giving yourself up with no one around and taking a sack.

I would agree except his propensity to turn it over.  It felt like anytime he got hit, he fumbled.  And to further complicate that, he has absolutely no feel for the rush.  Furthermore, the picks he started throwing down the stretch seemed completely reckless.  Also, Allen is 2 years into being a pro on a roster.  Grier, although older than most rookies, is still a rookie.  We've seen Allen's ceiling, imo.

Was it Cam Newton's first game?  Not hardly.

Was it Clausen's first game?  Nope, he actually tried to move in the pocket and throw it down the field.

He wasn't awful, but he wasn't good either.  He looked like a guy who hasn't played in 15 weeks.  Oh no, he looked like a rookie that hasn't played in 15 weeks.  You can see he's got some skill, but it was never gonna be on display today.  Poor kid.  At least Allen was a UDFA with some experience, not a Hurney draft pick behind a Hurney line.  I just want to write Cam an apology letter for dealing with this nonsense without so much as a complaint.

Greg Olsen (via The Athletic)

“He was thrown into an impossible situation. Two games left in a season where there’s been countless issues and now, throw him out there, play incompetent football around him — it’s impossible to get any sort of judgment based on his performance today,” Olsen said.

“There were failures all around him. Failures leading up to it. So I hope no one passes any judgment on Will’s abilities as a player, in the future going forward.”
