Well Bill Belichick has been the GM of the Pats since 2000. Hurney started with the Panthers in 1999 and was promoted to GM in 2002. He was fired in 2012 and returned in 2017.

From 2000 to 2017 the Patriots have drafted 63 pro bowlers and 16 first team all pros, 79 combined, tied for first in the NFL. In that same time span the Panthers have drafted 49 pro bowlers and 18 first team all pros, 67 combined, placing them in fourth. The 18 all pros is the most in the NFL. 85% of those players were drafted by Marty Hurney.

Im not a huge fan of Hurney but we could do much, much worse. I’m will to see what he can accomplish now that he is not being handicapped by Ron Rivera.

Agreed.

These guys don't know misery. If not for the Panthers the Bears would be my team and they haven't been to the SuperBowl since 2007 and 1986.

The Panthers have been a relatively successfull franchise and these whiners complain, complain, complain.

Spoiled. Enjoy having a good/great team and enjoy the ride. We may actually get better.

Seems like Hurney is the only GM that has trouble with Rivera? And why is 2000-2001 included?

And are you using totals from 13 years compared to 5 recent ones?  How’s that work out for players not around as long? Is there a link to the breakdown.

Even good owners like Kraft and Lurie fumbled around during their first few seasons.  Owning an NFL franchise is actually a very difficult undertaking, especially in the 21st century, so the odds of nailing it right off the bat are extremely low.  Whichever coach Tepper hires likely won't be here in four years.

You're going to have to be patient.  But Tepper could have helped himself by not promising the moon and the stars right off the bat.   Golden Rule of the NFL: Understate and Overperform.

Hurney made a deal with the devil. It’s the only explanation for his unwarranted career advancement.

By some faustian deal rise to level of GM on the strength of his “cap expertise” and “negotiation skills”.

Yep, included in the rant.

This thread is why The Huddle has become comedic gold.

It used to have intelligent and thoughtful discussion about The Panthers and the NFL.

Now it is full of a bunch of new people who can barely spell NFL....yet think they can break down film, evaluate talent, and make intelligent personnel decisions.  Hilarious.
