Rivera Presser tomorrow at 2pm

Mr. Scot

Has already been reported that Riviera chose Jack Del Rio as his DC rather than Steve Wilks. It's still possible Wilks could join him as a secondary coach, though. That job could also go to Perry Fewell.

Jeremy Fowler mention John Pagano's name as an option for the staff as well. Pagano was Rivera's linebacker coach in San Diego before succeeding him at DC, if I remember correctly. Al Holcomb could be an option there too but Pagano probably has the better reputation.

Ron's early entry means he'll get a crack at the best available assistants before the other head coaches are even hired.

It doesn't matter if Ron has the best available assistants to choose from. He'll only hire guys he knows well and is very comfortable with. Wouldn't want anyone bringing any new ideas or concepts to the equation.

Does Del Rio fit that mold though?

I think so. A lot of people in Oakland were tired of JDR by the time he got canned, but he's shown that he can at least develop a stud on the front line. Look at Julius Peppers in '02, Von Miller in '11 and now (probably) Chase Young.

Edit: I actually misspoke, as well as the guy on twitter who looked at this. JDR was hired a year after Miller was drafted. However, Miller's production went through the room from 11.5 sacks to 18.5 the next year.

Somebody on Twitter just pointed out that Julius Peppers, Von Miller and (expected) Chase Young will all have been drafted number two overall in years when their teams hired Jack Del Rio to be the DC.

Hell of a coincidence...

Yeh but it was Wade Phillips that drove the stake through our hearts...

there’s talk that the Rams might not bring Wade back and his contract is up.  I think he would be great here. It’s not Wades fault the Rams traded away all their draft picks and paid 1/2 their cap space to 4 players.  He would be a scapegoat.

Agreed. To me Wade is a great example of an outstanding coordinator that makes a lousy HC. ID take him as DC in a heartbeat though.

    • Sellers is absolutely one to keep an eye on. Could be the next Cam or could be the next Anthony Richardson. Curious to see how he has progressed come this fall.
    • I think Texas could go 0-12 and he would still go #1 based on his name and traits like you say.  But nusselman and sellers may be actually better qbs.    Man if bryce stinks it up this season its looking like a damn good year to swap out qbs.  Sellers highlights are just fuging jaw dropping
    • I mean, the kid comes from a wealthy family. It's not like he needs the money. He has a ton of potential now we get to see what he can do as a starter. Everyone penciling him in as the #1 overall pick is putting the cart way before the horse. It's 5% because of his talent and what he's showing on the field and 95% because his last name is Manning. And if he is what he's hyped to be the Texas coaching staff needs to be answering some tough questions about why the kid wasn't on the field sooner. Ewers was a good college QB but he's definitely not a "keep a future #1 overall pick waiting" type of college QB. Only getting one season out of a top NFL talent because you chose to keep him buried behind a borderline NFL talent is just coaching negligence. Not starting him as a true freshman? Yeah, I get that. But on year two if the kids is what he's hyped to be you gotta wish Ewers well elsewhere and turn the page.
