The reduction of contact in TC and practices has absolutely effected the defenses in recent years. We're seeing poor form, leading to injuries and poor effectiveness of defenses. Sure, it results in big plays and higher scores, but football being a game where 30+ points from both teams is just going to be laughable. It'll turn into the NBA. The mark of a good defense is consistently holding teams under 21 because scoring 3 TDs is SUPPOSED to be hard. If you score 3 TDs and a couple field goals, you should win. Defenses can't practice stopping an offense when they mentally have to turn on the ability to be an absolute animal on Sundays. That's a tough ask.

I remember before the start of the season they sent out a memo to players telling them to prepare for a holdout by making sure they have enough cash.

My money for the 'further reductions to training camp contact' point is that's just there to make the negotiation easier for the Players Association. That's one of the built-in "We can live without this if you provide [modification to the drug policy, etc]"

You go into the negotiation fighting for more than you expect to get, knowing some things will end up needing to be dropped to get something else.

But if the NFL accepts it, the players would gladly take it.

Glad the players have a union that's standing up for them. Can't have football without the football players. This sport has been skewed too far in favor of ownership for too long.

This is one that makes too much sense for both parties for it NOT to happen. Particularly give the promising early indications on cannabis and concussions.

The current NFL may appear as antiquated for fans 50 years from now as leather helmets do for fans today..

Wouldn't surprise me. The more info that comes out on CTE the worse it looks. I think anyone and everyone always knew that repeated blows to the head weren't a great thing, but I don't think many thought it was going to end up looking as bad as it seems like it's ultimately going to turn out to be.
