Saints appear ready to keep Hill over Bridgewater

There's a similar question you could ask yourself as well:

Is Payton's ego inflated enough to believe he could trick the rest of the league into believing Taysom Hill is worth something meaningful in trade?

No question.

Mind you, Loomis would have to be on board with that as well.

This is less about trade bait and more about hardball negotiations with Brees.

"Drew, we will be happy if you come back but we don't need you.  We have our future QB on the team already"

I mean....maybe...but if Taysom Hill isn't the real deal, and lord knows several people have already posted very well stated reasons why the notion he is is eyeroll worthy, don't you think a HOF player in the same locker room, heck same positional meetings, is gonna know that regardless of what his coach says? I think whether Hill is the answer or isn't, Brees knows that one way or the other without needing any public comment from Payton to put pressure on him. I don't see any way this could actually accomplish that.

What we think and what they think are generally very different things.

Take Bridgewater, for example. He looked like refried crap playing against us in Kyle Allen's first start. it was pretty much the universal opinion here when Brees went down that the Saints were about to have a very bad time.

Except they didn't. They went undefeated with Bridgewater under center.

I've pondered whether Payton might be like a dark side version of Andy Reid. Lord knows Reid could make mediocre quarterbacks look good enough that teams offered foolish trades for them. Maybe Payton's system can have the same effect.

(that's not meant as a slap at Brees, by the way; Brees is legit)

Brees was decent in SD, went to NO and became "one of the best ever".  That said Brees does have extraordinary ball placement, timing, and accuracy.

But to me, yes, I think that Paytons and Reids systems can make an average QB look good, a good QB look great, and a great QB look like the best ever.

As to that game vs. the Saints, Ron had to win that one, and Payton wanted to lose it, I'll never be convinced otherwise.

For the record, the Saints public stance is that Brees is welcome back if he wants to play.

Florio pointed out that if the Saints screwed with him, they'd earn the ire of pretty much their entire fanbase.

You can't really make football decisions based on what will make the fans mad though. You have to do what's best for the team.

Brees isn't that dumb.

Understandable, but it is also fair to note that Bridgewater (at least it was thought) needed to look good as this was his audition to be Brees' successor.

He looked like garbage but got brought back anyway.

Then this season he went undefeated as a starter and now the word is they don't want him anymore.

Football...

The at least it was thought thing is intriguing, maybe Payton told him the whole story and had already agreed to bring him back no matter what?

Like you said, football....

More info, and indications this might not be a hypothetical discussion.

Quote

Saints quarterback Drew Brees will return to the team for a 15th season or retire. Whatever he ultimately does, this isn’t an effort to generate attention or spark discussion. Brees, unlike plenty of other quarterbacks who from time to time have talked openly about retirement with no real intention of ever doing so, is and will be genuinely and seriously considering retirement.

As one source explained it to PFT, the Saints wants Brees back for what would essentially become a transition year, from Brees to Taysom Hill with Hill becoming the starter in 2021. Even if Brees comes back, Hill will be used much more extensively as part of the team’s offense in 2020 — especially in light of some private regret that, if Hill had been utilized just a little bit more in the wild-card loss to the Vikings, the Saints quite likely would have won the game.

Brees has said he’ll take a month or so to make a decision, and it should surprise no one if Brees decides to walk away. Whatever he does, the Saints will need a plan for keeping Hill, a restricted free agent who could generate plenty of interest if available to be signed to an offer sheet, even with a first-round pick as compensation.

PFT: Brees retirement talk isn't idle chatter

    • Well, they're both in the same league (if you will). During preseason, Fitz went 3/3 & Sauls went 5/6, but of course Sauls was 4/4 last night (including one 50+). Both were Lou Groza Award finalists. I believe Fitz made two 55+ yarders last season, while Sauls led the nation with three. Fitz was 13/13 (💯) while Sauls was 21/24 (87.5). Fitz was a 3rd-Team AP All-American, while Sauls was a PFF All-American.  Career-wise, Fitz was 58/74 (78.4), while Sauls was 52/64 (81.3). I wish that I could see the attempts and knew the depth of yardage. I wish that we could compare practice kicks during their training camps, but we can't. Maybe someone with a PFF/CFF account can give that Basically it's just a matter of belief I guess. Seeing dude knock down four FGs and go perfect during a pressure-filled game for him is damned impressive if you ask me. I don't believe that Fitzgerald could do that.  That being said, I'd have to know more. I will say that it may be worth mentioning that we seem to like PFF this year and Sauls being a PFF All-American may be notable. Now that being said, the Panthers may not be even considering Sauls.
    • Ive said it 1000x times on here.  Our 2025 season will be dictated by the first 4 games.  poo the bed there and lose all confidence and momentum, we win 5 games maybe.  Go 2-2, 3-1 we got a look at 7/8 wins
    • I basically made almost the exact predictions on a phone call with a buddy about 3 weeks ago. I really do expect Evero gone before the seasons end, Young to just not able to get over the hump enough and DC to head into next season on a VERY hot seat.
