TCH, you normally bring solid facts to support your argument.  I always read your posts---so I was a bit surprised by the phrasing here because it suggests that people do not like Cam.  People will not be disappointed to see him stay if it were only about 2020 and the player.  But there are many more variables, like 2021, his next contract, his upside from here/his age and injury history, and the rebuild.

However, if you want to stick to Cam the player only, let's take a look at the reason fans might be disappointed.  He has not thrown a TD pass since 2018.  He has not won a game since around October, 2018.  He has lost the last 8 games he started.  He has missed 15 of his last 18 games.  This is the third year he comes to camp nursing an injury/off season surgery.  Throwing away entire seasons waiting to learn the inevitable---Cam, the QB in the league who has taken more hits--some brutally vicious---has hit the wall.  He can no longer run like he used to and he is not a great QB if he has to earn his living in the pocket.  That is reality-take away his running and compare him to the most average QBs in the league and he is mediocre, to use a Tepper word.

"Take away his running" I really hate this argument because you can literally apply it to any quarterback, position, or player. "Take away what makes that player great or gives them an edge and they're only average!" Take away steph curry's ability to shoot 3's, hes an average player, what if people only looked at Vick as a passer? Vick wouldn't have lasted 3 seasons in the NFL. Lamar Jackson? "But Lamar threw for 36 Tds!" If teams didn't have to worry about Lamar running for 1200 yards is he still successful from the pocket? He barely threw for 3,000 yards that's below average. That argument just...isnt very good in my opinion. If you want to bring up his health and injury history then I understand you have an argument there, but to pick and choose what you decide to look at for a player like Cam is short sighted.

I’m trying not to read too much in anything these days, but coming off the heels of an usually candid Newton praising Hurney, Rhule, Brady, and the “process”....Marty could have offered up his standard praise he’s historically reserved for veteran leaders. He didn’t, and that made Steve Reed the beneficiary of a storyline.

So now, this gets picked up by other outlets. The narrative shifts from “Cam and the Panthers are in a good place, working together to get him back and rolling” to “NO COMMENT” on the future of his franchise qb who is currently under contract.

I guess I don't know what else he should say.  Everyone knows that Cam's rehab and health will be the deciding factor on anything and everything, regardless of how much anyone may want him to be here.

Should Hurney, whoever, just say 500 times "We will make a decision after Cam fully rehabs?"

I got a real nice laugh out of MHS touting Cam's recent 0-8 W/L record as a reason for doubting his return while glossing over the fact that the likes of Kyle Allen and Will Grier also led us on an 8 game losing streak. MHS even wanted to give a contract extension to one of those QB's. In short, he has absolutely no credibility left on the matter.

He could’ve avoided any controversy at all by saying something decent about the quarterback. The absence of any sort of reciprocal respect gives a guy like Steve Reed something to write about, which travels right down the AP wire to other outlets.

I’m not saying it’s the worst thing in the world. I’m just saying, offering no additional comment helped to muddy the waters. The timing was just weird. Then again, maybe Newton oversold things in his interviews. I didn’t get that sense.

Ok.  And the next time someone else asks the same exact question?  At one point should the Panthers stop answering the same exact question they already answered, just reworded?

At some point you have to let people know "we told you our answer, stop being idiots".  Its like when Rivera walked out because David Newton wouldn't shut up about asking about Cam.

We know the media are idiots.  We know they will drum up a CamConspiracy regardless of what Hurney or anyone else says (they've been doing it the entire last year).

Speaking to the Associated Press, Panthers GM Marty Hurney "refused to answer several" questions about Cam Newton’s future with the team.

"He’s rehabbing, that’s all I can say," was as far as Hurney was willing to go on Newton's health. He then refused to address Newton's Super Bowl week assertion that he would "absolutely" be back in Carolina in 2020. Newton also said he had an "unbelievable conversation" with Hurney, coach Matt Rhule and new owner David Tepper. General managers aren't known for their expansiveness, but Hurney's complete refusal to comment is certainly noteworthy. With then new league year approaching, we will likely know Newton's Carolina future by this time next month.

He’s gone.

Cam isn’t a liar. I don’t see him saying all that about staying and having a good talk with the GM and owner about staying to be fabricated or exaggerated.

I don’t either. But it’s also coming from Cam who wants to stay here. Not Tepper or Hurney(it pains me to even say that).
