Carolina sticking with Cam

Look y'all, I've been as big of a Cam Newton fan as anyone....but Ian Rappaport has been so inconsistent and downright wrong with his hot takes in the past, and with no official word coming directly from the team, I'd recommend taking this with a grain of salt.

And even if Rappaport's statement has some truth to it, the Panthers are probably saying all things sunny side up with Cam right now to drive up his value. "We want to keep him, he's getting as healthier and healthier, we're not considering a QB in the first round." Of course the team is going to say all these things in the offseason. There is zero benefit not to say anything other than positive statements about Cam at this stage in the offseason.

The problem is....nobody knows what the Panthers brass are going to do, or for even that matter are likely to do.

Typically you have an owner with a track record, or a GM, or a head coach.  Right now, everyone is in the dark.

If the team is actually leaking this info to Rap, in an attempt to drive trade value up, and they do end up trading him for less than fair mkt value, you’re going to start to lose some people.

Not me. I’m just here to do some analysis and have a little fun. It’s a real circuitous route to travel try to trade a player. I’m not saying it’s unprecedented. I’m just not certain it’s a very good PR strategy. I’m also not certain it’s a very good football strategy.

Do the Panthers brass even know at this point?

It sounds snarky to say but with so many things up in the air, it's a valid question.

There are certainly things they want to do, things they hope to do and things they wish they could do, but circumstances may not allow them to do any of those things.

this burrow not playing for the bengals narrative is even more forced and bullshit than the newton one, there isn't a shred of truth to it lol. he's gonna play for whoever, yes the bengals have a shitty owner but i mean hey, they got more playoff appearances than we do in the past decade. not like we had a particularly great owner either.. (he's not mike brown?)

It's pretty common practice, and a genuine possibility. The problem of course is that other teams know that.

The Panthers certainly aren't above it. There were some strong hints that the whole "Newton is healthy enough to play" leak to Adam Schefter last year might have come from the team.

If the injury thing is true then no they probably have no idea at this point.  But I would bet anything they would prefer to have this wrapped up by the time the draft comes around.  Must be incredibly hard preparing for the draft and 2020 if you dont know if your qb can even play.

I don't think that they do know for certain right now, and that's not really a knock on them, just the position in which they find themselves.

The Panthers are not in a good position right now.

    • A winning record would be nice, but I still have us winning around the 6 to 8 game mark. Realistically we should beat the Jets and Saints, that gets us to 5 wins. After that, we have to face a lot of potential play off teams and our divisional opponents. I think we’ll win 1 or 2 of those games to take us to 6 or 7 wins, perhaps 8 wins if we can spring a further surprise.  Is that enough progress for head coach and QB? I’m not sure, it will depend on performances and output. That said, it’s nice to be back in a position where we are thinking about the play offs.
    • I would tend to agree about not falling into the trap and paying a below average QB, but sometimes situations can “force” a team to pay that QB. For example, if we play ourselves into a 9-8 like record, then what options will we have in the draft? Or do we avoid the draft and trade for or sign someone in free agency?  I’m not convinced by the 2026 QB draft class. There’s some intriguing prospects but no one that really screams “draft me”. I’m not sure we’ve got anyone really that stands out as a trade candidate or free agent signing. So although we might not want to commit a big money contract to Young, him playing well and showing progress might force the team’s hand.
    • Realistically we would be looking at no more than a mid round pick for Dowdle or Chuba. Are we really that desperate for a mid round pick? Not really. I would much prefer us utilise the two RBs in a 1-2 punch similar to how we used D-Will and Stewart. After all, Bryce is not Drew Brees. He won’t throw for 300+ yards and carry the team consistently as a passer. So having a strong running game with a 1-2 punch will be beneficial to him, and it will also be beneficial to the RBs because we can spell them and not overwork them.
