Derrick Brown RAS

Brown then posted decent explosion numbers, with a somewhat below-average vertical and above-average broad jump. That might have been disappointing for some, as Brown’s tape suggested a very explosive player, but at his size that was more than acceptable. What got heads turning, in a more negative way, was the horrible agility drills, as Brown finished his testing with a bottom tier 8.22 second 3-cone drill.

In a passing league, teams are always looking for an edge getting pressure. When that involves rushing up the middle, it’s always about finding the next Aaron Donald, the next Geno Atkins, or the next Chris Jones.

Could Akiem Hicks be a better comp for Derrick Brown?

Before the Combine, Derrick Brown was compared to Ndamukong Suh by some. But after posting agility times a full second slower than Suh, those were immediately replaced by comparisons to another larger player with a similar build, Akiem Hicks.

Brown improved his score big time. Look at his video on twitter of his 3 cone. Also his coaches and professionals didnt want him to do the 3 cone at his pro day, but he did it on video a day later and improved his score. Its like maybe the new schedule for the combine wasn't a good thing?????

He's not going to block a bunch of FGs, I can live with that.  Jumping ability for a DT is not a tangible metric for what they are asked to do.  Like the bench press for a punter.

They use the vertical for how explosive a player is off the line.  Not really jumping ability.  But the combine itself I have problems with.  It started out as a place where all the teams could medically check out all the big name players.  Now it has turned into a show to see who is the most athletic.  Not who is the best football player.

I got it, but I don't think the correlation is that strongly related. To me, the 10 yard split would be a better indication of that than broad jump or vertical jump.

I agree though, combine performances doesn't negate production of play on the field.  Then there are teams that get burned by guys who don't show up on tape, but train for and show well the combine

if we blow the 7th overall pick in the NFL draft on a 3rd wave prospect like javon kinlaw then my general apathy for this franchise right now is somehow going to skyrocket even higher

Or brown. U go BPA and even with QBs going early, he is not that great. I don't get the hype with him and definitely not taking Kinlaw there.

    • I don't really care as much about athleticism and arm strength.  While Murray might be better in that regard, I think Bryce has enough of both to do well in the NFL. The main reason this trade reference is silly is the money and the fact that Murray has been around a long while and hasn't proven that he can perform consistently when the game is on the line.  Bryce has shown that he can play well in the clutch (in the few opportunities he has had).
    • If Bryce can continue the level of play he showed after the benching, then there's a good shot we at least compete to win the division. Tampa is a solid team but even last year in our week division they went 10-7 and will be on their 4th OC in as many years. The Saints are a mess and are in a mist of a half rebuild half still trying to compete mode and will probably be starting a rookie QB. The Falcons are a wild card as they have a really good offense but are we really crowning Michael Penix as a franchise QB after just 3 games?  The only thing I want out of this season is for Bryce to come out and without a shadow of a doubt prove he's our franchise QB. If that happens then most of the fanbase would be happy and I believe we'd be in a good place record wise at the end of the season. Maybe falling just short of winning the division with a chance to sneak in as a wild card team.
