The #Panthers are finalizing a deal with QB Teddy Bridgewater

The silver lining I'm finding in this contract

Teddy is fragile, and likely to get injured behind our line by week 3.  Then we roll out Will Grier, lose every game, and draft Lawrence.

Tepper wakes up from whatever stroke he's experiencing, fires Rhule, and we actually do a real rebuild around Lawrence.

Welcome back to mediocrity...our trusted and familiar friend.

This pretty much seems like the plan. I could understand a partial rebuild around the core talent or a total blow up and start over, but it's as if we are just going to shoot for around .500. We might as well have kept Rivera. JR and Fox too, for that matter.

As Steve Smith said earlier. Cam isn't Rhule or Brady's guy. Brady was there with Bridgewater and has the same system in place that he flourished in. This is what you expect with a coaching turnover, you also have a player turnover as the coaches get their guys. Other than Rhule apparently contradicting himself at the combine, this is what you would expect.

Hmmm... on the one hand, $20 million per year is a bargain for a starting qb these days, particularly by the end of this contract where there might be more than one $40 million per year qb. On the other hand, Kyle Allen in his 5-0 start looked about as good as Bridgewater did in his 5-0 start and we all know how that turned out. And Allen was playing behind an inferior o line. Imagine if Cam came back healthy after that 5-0 start and teams were looking to sign Allen as their potential starter this offseason. We very well might look back at this and realize we just paid $20 million per year for the Saints' Kyle Allen.

Let's hope Joe Brady's experience with Bridgewater is actually meaningful and they translate it into above average qb play, because then it's a bargain of a contract. It seems like it's priced out so that even if he bombs, the numbers aren't crippling particularly if the guarantees are modest. So from that end, it's somewhat understandable.

My biggest gripe is the way we are treating Cam with this. Why not give him a chance at his bargain contract? If he comes back healthy, getting rid of him will be a franchise-destroying mistake. Why not wait a year? Is Bridgewater really that great that you throw all that away for him? And for those saying this is a bridge move for Herbert, that's asinine. Cam would've been a much more logical bridge on a 1 year contract. What kind of moronic move is it to commit $60 million for a bridge qb, lose out on our 3rd round comp for Bradberry, and give up the chance to draft a potential all-pro defensive talent at 7 so you can groom the 3rd highest rated qb prospect in this draft? No, all the moves we've made so far have been young guys with untapped potential for Rhule to build up. Bridgewater fits with that. For better or for worse, he's gotta be our plan at qb for the foreseeable future.

It’s not like the players wouldnt bail for more cash at EVERY opportunity

Like I said...business is business.  If the Panthers believe these moves are in the best interest of the franchise (which I disagree with) then they need to do it - however, making these movies and attempting to paint them as "mutual agreements" to part ways is stupid and disrespectful.  Plus how does the franchise possibly benefit from making these false claims?  Players like Cam and Olsen are going to refute them (like they have) so there's no good will or publicity that the franchise receives.  It's just dumb.

    • My favorite thing about football is it's unpredictability. Jake was a living embodiment of that 😆 But man, when it was good, it made for some amazing memories. That 2003 season was just...
    • I just don't understand how we want a third year QB to "ball out" with a rookie WR as his #1, a rookie TE as his #1 TE, 2 sophomore WRs (one is a 1st rounder that is being outplayed by the other who is an UDFA), a sophomore TE that struggles with blocking, and Tommy Tremble.  And all of that with what's now a 2nd year HC, who's calling plays for his third time - ever! This is a super young team that is outperforming expectations right now. The Panthers are winning games against better teams and the QB is a big reason why. You have to give Bryce, TMac, Legette, Coker, Evans, Sanders and Canales time.  Otherwise we could just be the Browns or the Jets. No one wants that anymore. If they were going backwards, then yes, blow it up again. They aren't. They're getting better. They look like an actual competent NFL team. They're wildly inconsistent because they're incredibly young and inexperienced. All of them. Not just Bryce. But they're arrow is pointing up, so we should be patient and ride it out. It could be alot worse. A lot worse.
    • I think Bryce gets the 5th year option picked up, but I do not think that means the team doesn't pursue an upgrade at the QB position through the draft or free agency.
