Draft direction breakdown...

WOW!!

Recommended Posts

Jmo (which definitely could be wrong)  The draft is basically looking like a 3 horse race for us at 7.. If we don't trade down.. Imo again with the little football logic i have.. This offseason so far has pointed to a defensive minded picking draft strategy.. The player on our Radar should be Okudah,  Simmons or Brown..  1a. Okudah  shutdown CB is a top value position and it's a top 2 need for us now.... 1b. Brown lesser value then a CB but top need for us with only 1 on the roster and our run defense being atrocious.. 2. Simmons  LB isn't a great value position in today football but the out of world talent and we do need a LB is hard to pass up...

1 of these guys will definitely be there at 7.. But I want to look at where we should go after we draft 1 of these guys.. What is our direction after or when we pick 1 of these players..

Imo..

1. After Okudah .. DT is a must.. Then you can look at Lb, WR, another DT maybe a guard/center ,TE or safety in the 3rd, 4th and 5th... Only way I don't get a DT in the 2nd round is if  a WR like Denzel Mims is there.. IF that happens I double tap DT in the 3rd and 4th or 3rd and 5th rounds..

2. After Brown.. You have to go CB in the 2nd.. Then in the 3rd, 4th and 5th . WR, LB, S, OG-TE- or double tap DT.. But I would definitely look WR in the 3rd first if we go Brown, Cb in rounds 1 and 2...

3. After Simmons... You have to get a starting CB or atleast somebody competing to be a starter day 1.. Then 3rd 4th and 5th rounds would be a mix of WR and DT double tap.. then look at OG/C, TE or secondary depth in the last 2 rounds..

Jmo..

I know we go back and forth on this but a DT is much much much easier to find then a stud LT.  And there are a ton of stud LT's at the top of this draft.  Its time to quit dicking around and build a solid oline

I would go Thomas at 7 (or whoever they have rated the highest) and then maybe Biadasz if he is there in the 2nd.

After 2020 and perhaps sooner we are again going to be looking at replacing our center and LT.  We need to build something sustainable.

When you go into a draft having to get position X or position Y, whatever those positions are,  you have already failed.  Having 1 position that you really have a need at is ok if you have a 1st and 2nd round pick.  A player should be available in the first 2 rounds of the draft at that need position that could at least compete for a starting spot.  Having 3 or 4 and having to pick for need instead of best player is how you end up with 4 and 5 picks in the draft and trading up to get a player you need when a better player is available but the team can't draft him because he does not fit the need.

I think there are probably two players (Realistically) that the Panthers wouldn’t pass on. Okudah and Simmons.

Simmons seems like the prototype for what Rhule wants. He’s extremely productive. He’s got insane numbers.

Okudah is a top 5 pick at a spot of need.

With Bridgewater in the fold and a relationship with Brady...I don’t see a QB happening. So...I think the move would be to trade down. Maybe try to acquire assets for next year to get players they want and get in position to move up for a QB. Next years QB class is exponentially better barring any unforeseen returns.

I do think they could pass on Brown as they could see gaining picks and getting a DT later could be a more valuable scenario.

I know that people love Kinlaw and think he’s going top 10. I think he’s more of a top 15 player. He’s not an edge. He’s a 1 or 3 technique and I’d argue that he’s not even a true NT. Those type of players just tend to not juice the draft room no matter how valuable they end up being. I think you could trade down and get Kinlaw plus picks.

    • No, you're right. It doesn't mean you can't call out his flaws and poor play. But it also doesn't mean you can't admit when he plays well and shows improvement. Not you personally, just in general I mean.
    • I will say, I do think there's a version of Bryce that could be really successful as a high-volume passer in a spread-based offense built around quick throws and timing-based intermediate throws with deeper throws schemed up around them. I actually think the power run based offense we're running is a poor fit for Bryce as it requires him to play under center far more often. It's a very traditional offensive approach whereas I think a scheme that spreads defenses out and lets Bryce distribute the ball quickly with anticipation and accuracy is the sweet spot for him. The key, of course, is to find a way to run the ball efficiently out of those formations. Our personnel right now (backs and OL) aren't good fits for that style of offense and I'm not sure it's a scheme Dave Canales favors very much either.
    • I root for him, and I hope for the best, as does essentially everyone. But that doesn’t mean you can’t call out flaws and bad plays. And that’s what a lot of people get wrong.  I hope I’m wrong and that he continues to improve a lot, I just doubt it. But I’ve been wrong before
