In an interview on WFNZ Sports Radio in Charlotte on Tuesday, Ron Rivera was asked if the Redskins were ever interested in Cam Newton and Rivera said Washington never showed interest in his former quarterback.

“We have a young football team with a young quarterback. We have a chance to establish this. Where we are right now we have made a commitment to young guys,” Rivera said.

Yea with Smitty in his prime, two first round rbs and a vastly better line. Minus Mike Shula.

I know right. Another writer just posted that it’s ironic that we finally bring in a starting FA after years of suck for Cam only to eject him for an interception checkdown machine that’s coming off a worst injury for much more money,..

ridiculous!

I said it years ago, Cam Newton = Allen Iverson. Number 1 draft pick and was expected to carry not the team, but the entire franchise on their back with little to no help. They both almost won a championship... close... but didn't get it.

After A.I was traded, the 76ers wasn't even talked about for the next 10+ years. Will that happen to the Panthers? We'll see, but I also see the Panthers are banking on their system carrying this team. We'll see if it does. If it becomes too good, Joe Brady will probably "see" having his own team and some of these teams will do it.

You can't make big changes like this (and yes Luke is included cause I firmly believe if Ron stayed, Luke would have to) and don't have success within 3 years, a championship in 4. Panthers fans are not going to support it. I remember Cam complaining about the lack of home crowd his 1st two years. Man if this next season don't go well it's going to be brutal, I'm already expecting a weak turnout

Cam released 4 years after MVP.  When I think about this I get crazy pissed off with that Denver game to start the season.  He was brutally hit at the head and that shet is horrible.  Cam changed this league and deserves to be in the HOF.  His numbers say yes IMO.

There's definitely plenty of argument to be made that this is a good football decision.

The way it was handled and executed though? That's bullsh-t!

Yeah, sucks it ended this way, always enjoyed watching him play when it wasn't against the Falcons.

Wonder if it's possible for him to reinvent himself as a pocket passer somewhere else?

I can't lie. I'm glad this is over with.

Too much drama. Too much clinging to this fantasy of a player that isn't that player anymore. Too many holes on a team to stay the course next season, assuming there will be one. In the grand scope of things, I can't be as upset when there are more important things to be upset about.

God you would think this is a funeral with all the Cam Huggers crying in here. This is why this place has been trash for the past two years. Too many fans of a player not the team. I hope the Panthers never again make one player so special. Steve Smith was right when he left the Panthers wanted to make it all about Cam and they did. He was a great player no doubt but I'm not giving up the Panthers over Newton.

    • Yeah and I am doubtful he can offer that consistently. I don’t have many years left at my age and in my view we have wasted two and this whole exercise with him was always a three year minimum.  I am out on that with a guy I don’t believe in, and never believed in, it has sucked. To me it is a costly detour off the right track. Years.    But I am not so rigid that I can’t see excellence. He needs to display it though, consistently before I change my outlook.
    • No, when I said rage, I meant rage, which only applies to certain fans on this board. Your timeline of trying to assess whether he is the future or not is really tied to the discussions surrounding his second contract. If this team is going to commit to some monster contract while he has shown nothing but glimpses of brilliance would be deservedly worrisome, so the clock is genuinely ticking for him to settle into something resembling his final form. Perhaps a best case scenario is that he plays well, the team succeeds, but he does so with a more limited role that makes the rest of the league view him as a game manager, and his second contract value reflects that. Then he continues to improve and becomes a bargain comparatively while not handicapping the team around him, and we enter an era of consistent championship competitiveness that the fanbase has craved for decades and has never really experienced before. But that requires many, many things to go right and for Bryce himself to facilitate that if he ends up being the quarterback of the future.
    • Exactly. And the flame throwers as well, get location benefits from not going all out. But they have it in reserve.  Not sure how much Greg had but he was an artist.  There was a YouTube I came across last year or maybe even 2023 and I don’t how to even find now but it had two NFL QBs I want say one was Carr from the Raiders but I don’t really remember  The point of it is they stood side by side throwing identical distances to identical targets. Radar gun was used.  They threw the normal effort (not all out) and it was measured etc. Then they were asked to throw their ‘fastball’. They were missing and most often they were missing high. It demonstrated the same principle.    edit: and applying that to arm strength, give me the guy that doesn’t need max effort to have good velocity. The margins are so narrow with less velocity in tne NFL the defenders can Close on it and this is a league where they value down to the 100th of a second level. It is that tight
