The market for Newton

Sure, there is a lot of uncertainty with the 30-year-old given his injury-plagued past two seasons. Yes, I can understand a little trepidation about Newton's foot, which ended his 2019 season after two games, following a shoulder injury shutting him down in 2018. But that is why all contracts are not binding until the team can conduct a physical. And that's more than enough protection, given the opportunity to perhaps buy exceedingly low on one of the greatest talents to ever play the position.

Perhaps Newton has lost a half step. Maybe the accumulation of all of those years of playing his position like a linebacker have caught up to him. But if ever there was a buyer's market, this is it, with the entire league taking a pass on the chance to trade a late-round pick for a highly production former top overall pick on a one-year, $19M flyer of a contract.

Which tells us a few things about what is to come next.

In this depressed and overcrowded QB market, Newton is very likely looking at a prove-it contract below that $19M figure. I'm guessing maybe around $15M with the chance to earn four or five more in playing time and productivity incentives. If someone was valuing him at more, then they would have traded for him.

An enterprising team with a need to upgrade at quarterback may be able to get Newton to agree to a two or three year deal that automatically voids should he manage to hit certain high thresholds. Or, should Newton achieve certain standards in 2020, then an additional year of the deal is triggered at, say, $35M or something like that. Regardless, there are more than a few creative ways that a club could attach itself to this asset, knowing that if Newton does play well in 2020, and then leaves as a free agent in 2021, then a high 2022 comp pick is coming. A team could sign Cam and still draft a QB high in the first round. They are not going to be mutually exclusive.

It's a pretty good read. I recommend it.

People keep whining that we didn’t get anything for Cam because Hurney screwed up.  No...we didn’t get anything because there isn’t a market for a QB who hasn’t won a game in nearly 2 seasons, and hasn’t been fully healthy for longer than that.

Cams been a free agent for Over 24 hours  and still not a peep as to a team being highly interested.  I love Cam...but this has nothing to do with Hurney or Rhule or Tepper.

The team waited until the last minute to even try to trade him, and then waited until all the seats were taken to release him.

Had the Panthers advertised a month ago they were trading him openly... plenty of teams would have stepped up.

no WAY the Colts prefer Rivers over at least trading for Cam pending a physical,.. That’s just one example.

What sense does the last part make ? There’s a quarantine, so he can’t meet with teams ect anyway, also there’s no way to determine who and who doesn’t have Interest without being someone who’s directly involved. I’d wait until the quarantine is over before jumping the gun on that one

I meet with co-workers and clients everyday from home and we conduct business.  If someone wanted to meet with Cam they could.

    • Saw this show up in my new feed. Nice to see a couple of our rookies making it into the top 5 so far, even if it is a pff measure... From https://www.pff.com/news/nfl-top-15-rookies-week-9-2025 ... 4. TE Mitchell Evans, Carolina Panthers (78.7) Evans struggled in the Panthers’ tight win over the Packers, finishing with a 41.8 PFF overall grade — third worst among tight ends this week. He was not targeted in the game and played only one snap in pass protection. He did log 15 run-blocking snaps, and although he earned a 68.9 PFF run-blocking grade in zone looks (seven snaps), his 39.0 mark in gap schemes (second worst for the week) dragged him down to a 46.6 PFF run-blocking grade overall — sixth worst for the week. Despite seeing zero targets over his past two games, Evans still leads the Carolina tight end group with a 74.3 PFF receiving grade. He has caught all nine of his targets for 90 yards, six first downs and two touchdowns. Evans also leads the Panthers’ tight end group in PFF run-blocking grade (72.2). He has recorded a 20.5% positive play rate across 175 snaps.  5. WR Tetairoa McMillan, Carolina Panthers (78.6) McMillan had a better day against the Packers, recording four catches for 46 yards. Most of that production came in the first quarter via two 16-yard catches — one of which he snatched from Carrington Valentine’s hands, who was in perfect position to break up the pass. McMillan accounted for three first downs on the day, although Green Bay was able to limit his impact after the catch, holding him to 0.8 yards after the catch per reception. McMillan now has 41 catches for 558 yards — a top-15 mark. He is also tied for second with 19 explosive gains of 15-plus yards. Three of McMillan’s catches against the Packers came between the numbers, bringing him to 22 for 318 yards and 19 first downs (tied for second most) this season. He owns a 26.1% threat rate and a 76.6 PFF receiving grade between the numbers. He also ranks in the top 10 in explosive gains (10) and yards after the catch per reception (5.5) within that area of the field.
    • At least we don't need to hear overreacting about towels ...
    • Actually there is, try being a Charlotte Hornets fan. I mean the team fuging moved at its peak and hasn't recovered since and that was 25 years ago
