Cam Newton: "They gave up on me"

NAS

Recommended Posts

Teams are always looking to make decisions in (what they believe to be) their best interests - just like players. No reason to ever take anything personally. Neither side has any obligation to the other. Life changes.

Good luck to Cam going forward. And hopefully things work out well for the Panthers as well.

FWIW, I think the Panthers did the best thing for the franchise long-term in letting Cam go. A super physical player who's at his best when he can subject himself to lots of contact at the QB position with injury troubles on the wrong side of 30 isn't a player to build your future around imo.

I'm waiting to see what kind of contract Cam eventually does get from another team to really finalized my personal feelings.  I get why Cam most likely wanted an extension; BUT in a way he also gave up on us because it is understandable why the Panthers wanted him to play out the last year of his contract as a show me year (yes assuming that's what they wanted).

If Cam ends up with basically a one year deal from another team then  .    If he gets more years and guarantee's then good for him.  Overall I wanted Cam here for 2020 season to see if he could be a good to great QB ... but understand the concern of the Panthers extending him prior.

I would say that if the 2 programs that have the most knowledge of Cam, us and Washington, had no interest, it may be awhile. Of course, the virus situation doesn't help.

I wish him the best, but I also understand that the Panthers needed to move on. And, I'm not sure there was an easy way to do that. Cut him now or cut him later, there would be critics of either approach.

And, the fact that they said they wanted him for this year...things change. They found a better situation with TB. Of course, Cam - when healthy - is a better player. But, he hasn't been healthy in a long time.

@grateflday raises an interesting point.

If it turns out Cam is never productive in the NFL again will the decision to "kick him to the curb" be viewed in a new light?

Will all the folks who are bashing the team and management then acknowledge that, hmm, maybe those guys knew exactly what they were doing?

I wonder if Cam wants to pay back the 40 million he received over the past 2 years.

The only appropriate answer to this ridiculous statement would start with the letter F and O but, since that would be rude and the mods might not like it, a poo emoji will have to do.

I still think the team would have been ok with him playing the last year on his deal.

Well, since the exact reverse of your statement above was what happened right here in the real world, you might want to catch up on your data.

    • Well. Unfortunately the Cam Newton era put a spotlight on some very ugly folks. We'll leave it at that. Athlete salaries especially for certain skill positions have gotten absurd to say the least and we live in heightened times of awareness as a society so general criticism will always be present. For me it boils down to what I'm seeing and hearing with my own eyes and ears. If the QB is pulling his weight and even doing some of the heavy lifting for those around him then he will receive the benefit of the doubt so long as he is holding up his end of the bargain. And all QB's even the really good ones are going to have some lesser games compared to others. But where we are now is basically just being thrilled when our guy can do the most basic things on a football field. And there are people who can't understand why dialogue is not getting any better. If it were not so absurd it would be quite amusing.
    • It’s been a couple seasons so I don’t remember the exact quote, but I’m pretty sure I remember him admitting to mailing it in at the end of the season.
    • I feel like at three years here, he could take the mentor training wheels off.    Aside from that I wonder about whatever advice he needs from Dom concerns… he should know his XOs cold.   I would think a mentor could help more with things like how to handle problems with his staff, with his boss, issues with players, more stuff like that than XO stuff.
