It would make sense just freezing the cap for the next several years.  That won't make up a majority of that money, but will knock a significant dent into it.

Even in that situation it's going to throw a major wrench into plans. NFL teams write these back loaded contracts based on the assumption of an ever growing cap.

True, but that will be more manageable (easier to manipulate) than just slicing $30-$80 million right off the top.

It sucks to be the Saints...kings of back-loaded, dummy year deals.  Couldn't be happier for them!:shades:

The key might be if college football is played and a lot of NFL stars sat it out. In that situation, I could definitely see NFL viewership suffering with major college football being the primary beneficiary.

From what I've been reading, the college football season sounds less likely to be played than pro football does.

Also, fair or not, you'd have a contingent of people who've suffered through their own tough times that wouldn't be all that sympathetic to "whiney millionaires".

NFL viewership increased a bit last year after several years of decline. The owners are not going to want to jeopardize fan popularity, ticket sales and TV ratings I don’t think. The real possibility of limited fans in the stands next year coupled with star player work stoppage = total disaster. The NFL owners are greedy as fug but I don’t think they’re dumb enough to cut the cap.

Maybe not, but if the choice is between jeopardizing all of that or taking a hit to their own wallets, I'd expect them to choose the former.

It sounds like the SEC is pretty determined to play, regardless of what the NCAA says. If any entity has the power to thumb their noses at the NCAA and bust that monopoly, it's SEC football.

@Woodie

This was exactly what I was warning about when talking about the cap going up to make CMC's deal seem better in a couple years.

You CAN look at it that way, but the cap stalling, or even going down isn't unheard of, and we may be seeing it again....key word MAY.

In that case, they would be confirming to be both greedy and dumb.

I have wondered about this. Wow that would be a huge speedbumb in the ever increasing Cap projections. They could always run a no increase year and see if it rebounds. Those new blockbuster deals and stadiums are starting to look suspect.

Just 5 seasons ago the cap was $155 million (was project $201 million before COVID-19), so freezing the annual increase for 3-5 years should make up a great deal of that sum.

This is the better option. But why not just take the immediate loss on the chin. Be satisfied with and draw from the BILLION$ you’ve made in previous years. Continue to grow the NFL to insure future sustainable success with satisfied players and fans.

I doubt anybody would dispute that as a collective, they're greedy. The players association sure as hell wouldn't.

it's also true that at least a certain percentage of them are dumb. The question is how many.

Wealthy people don't "take it on the chin" during economic downturns. They seek to greatly benefit by snatching up assets at deep discounts. Every economic downturn ultimately leads to further concentration of wealth.

Who cares . . . most of us are taking pay cuts so why shouldn't NFL players.  I'll be thankful to see any type of football this year and I'll even take bad football.  If NFL players go diva on us and start sitting out or whining about taking a pay cut, this is not going to end well for them and it will run off a lot of fans.
