We need short.

You guys are hating.

We probably don't need him now. We have torn down our team to the point that his inclusion or exclusion is pretty irrelevant.

Looks like we'd save about $28 mil in "real money" if we cut him this offseason. The bulk of his cap would still end up as dead money, so our cap would still get nuked with his dead money number for the next 2 years.

If teams are scared about the potential of lower revenue, they might choose to cut older players to save money.

Teams might be quicker to cut veterans this August

Mind you, the Panthers might be ahead of the curve on that front.

Short and Okung are really the only good examples of this for us. Most of the rest are pretty minimal savings. There aren't many players outside that that can save us much money by cutting them this season versus next.

This will be interesting to watch.  The last time something like this happened, teams were in major trouble.  This time a lot of teams have been struggling to spend all of their money, and even sandbagging to a degree (like paying out $20M in signing bonus money in the form of a roster bonus).

We would have to have really young guys do amazing early to replace any vets left on the team at this point. The second half of the season and next offseason is where I would expect to see more vets being in jeopardy on our team if it isn't a cut or trade to prove something by the new staff.

Now what other teams would do come August when more is know and the fiscal projections solidify? Could get real ugly for players with suddenly bloated contracts that finds themselves on the other side of a moved line of value.

It's still early on so it shouldn't be panic time yet. They will know a lot more in August. If it goes worst case and there is a massive cash flow or cap reduction, it's going to be a killing field and a buyers market. I would guess we are well positioned with a ton of easy to get out of contracts and massive dead money which is already spent.

We have exactly 6 players age 30 and older; two being Gano and Jansen...STers.  I don't think Short, Okung, Whitehead and Paradis have to worry this year.  Those four guys are either 30 and 31-years old.  Not exactly geriatric status.

Okung and Whitehead have one-year contracts essentially. They happen to be at two huge areas of need, LT and LB.  Short and Paradis basically have two years left.  We could cut/trade them next June, split the dead cap money and get a ton of cap space in return.  Getting rid of four guys this year just because they are at an arbitrary age of 30 (or 31) makes zero sense.
