“When the Panthers unceremoniously released Cam Newton I knew that I would need to reevaluate my consumption of the NFL. I had been a fan of the Carolina Panthers since 2001, sat through 2 heart crushing Super Bowl Loses, (the second of which made it difficult for me to enjoy football in general for several years) and the organization was again making an obvious mistake giving up on the only real reason anybody outside of the Carolina's cared about their franchise. The Panthers not only failed to protect Cam Newton in Carolina, they neglected to ever pair him with another dynamic play maker on offense until drafting CMC. It was already becoming difficult to watch Panther games as I became to question the point of wasting 3 hours of my Sundays on a broken product, and becoming emotionally invested in something that I did not in any way benefit from.

So Carolina releases Cam via Twitter. Among all of the chaos in the world, an NFL team releasing an NFL player shouldn't change anyone worldview, but it just logically didn't make any sense for me to continue being a "fan" of any sports organization. Their wins and their loses are their wins and their loses. I can observe from the outside and enjoy the amazing talent on the field, but getting emotionally invested is a waste of my time I thought.

And so I tuned in yesterday for the first time in my adult life as a causal speculator of the NFL. No rooting interests. I was excited to see Cam obviously, but I was equally as excited to see Brees V Brady, Lamar, Rogers, hell even Josh Allen. It was nice to just enjoy the greatest sport on Earth without any bias. It was akin to being at the movie theater as opposed to playing a game of chess, but you're not controlling any of the pieces. I'm sure the NFL prefers it that way. I consume more of their product, more advertisers are in front of my face, its a win win. And then Cam Newton scored his first Touchdown.

The thing about Cam Newton is that he not only loves football, he loves life, and he doesn't care about the undue criticism that he has endured throughout his NFL career. He has somehow found a way to embrace who he is and play at a high level. It is inspiring,always has been. It is also infectious to be around. Thats how the bum ass Carolina Panthers managed to briefly go over .500 as a franchise. (Currently sitting at 195-205-1 ) Its infectious on the field but it is also infectious to watch. I was hooked. When he handed the ball to Andrews for the spike and you can see how happy he is for Andrews, I need that energy directly in my veins the rest of 2020. Win Lose or draw, being positive, taking care of each others and trying our best is the best any of us could ask of ourselves at this point in time. That is who Cam Newton is.

This is obviously a world class organization and it doesn't take a rocket scientist to figure out why. That game was never in question yesterday and that was clearly a watered down version of what this team will look like in 8 weeks. The coaching staff is perhaps the best in any organized sport. This is a potent combination and makes for perhaps the most interesting NFL season for me personally, ever. As a born New Englander, but also a lifelong Patriot hater (moved down south at 6) I am officially off of the fence. I hope this team wins the damn Super Bowl and I will be rooting all of the way. And it feels damn good.”

They’re kidding themselves if they think Belichick is going to give Cam a warm send off.

Nothing wrong with changing teams because of one player? I find it beyond pathetic.  Why would Pats fans welcome this idiot if he will just go pull for the next team when convenient

Because 60% of their entire fanbase is bandwagoners? I see Pats fans gear on people that have never even stepped foot in New England. They are the new Cowboys/Steelers

my guess is this person was not a fan since 2001 I mean who is going to admit they creepily follow one player around lol gotta try start off with some credibility on the pats forum

Anyone who abandons their team to chase a player wasn't a fan of the team. Especially when they jump to the most hated team in the NFL.

meh, people who followed cam never had a team

it’s more like saying they’d abandon their player to chase a team if they were to stay

its why this person clearly isn’t a fan since 2001. 19 years being a fan and all you mention is cam?
 

There’s been a lot of poo from this franchise in that long of time just to mention 1 player. 
 

Another way to tell is how fans react to the new ownership and team, cam era fans don’t understand pre cam Panther era (and most the nfl at all) if they did they wouldn’t be so cynical/harsh about the way things work, what’s been done and where the team is trying to go

      I guess I should have stipulated outside the sacred cow.   I complained from year one that Bryce should compete for and win the starting job on his own merit but no he was just handed it. I have been right there with everyone that wants competition.  But I don’t really have a huge problem with it for this season the way it has gone because where are the viable people we don’t have to trade for? I actually am okay with tiny hands Pickett because he is so close to Bryce arm strength wise and to be honest, skill wise. Probably. And it is only a one year deal.  That also takes I to account that the QB class is looking stacked next year and if Young fails miserably then we get either a reset or a real competition and there will be more guys that I would like looking at in the FA QB class next year as well.    I sort of accept where we are this year and look at it as a treading water year. I just want to get to next year with some clarity. More than anything. And they did empty out the room. Again, who was really there for us?  And I know it would not be a true competition at this point anyway. They are giving him the year, like it or not.    Also I don’t give a poo about winning games IF he sucks and or goes down after sucking because draft position and that stacked QB class.  And I want out from under him So Bad.     So I guess it is several factors that lessen my anxiety over his backup this particular season.    I am not trying to convince anyone, but you asked.

      think these smaller Qb's are going to have a much harder time convincing an NFL team to draft them. not saying a smaller Qb under 6 feet tall will not make an NFL roster .it will most likely be a UDFA contract more or less prove it deal.NFL teams have been burnt time & time again investing in these small NFL Qbs & i think  teams are now finally starting to realize that investing in these smaller Qb's under 6 feet tall is simply a bad idea  ...just saying
