How NFL executives view Rhule

More power actually proved to be Chip Kelly's undoing (although I thought he was kind of overrated to begin with). How well will Rhule handle that kind of power if it's given to him?

Anything’s possible but I can’t see that being an issue with Rhule. Kelly was egotistical and fits the category of a college coach that should have stayed one. As mentioned earlier, Rhule reminds me of Pete Carroll - he’s a motivator and leader of men that gets the most  out of his players. But he seems grounded enough to know it’s not all about him and his staff appears to speak to that. Things can change but I just don’t see having potentially more power over roster decisions being too big for him.

That will/would never happen with David Tepper at the helm.

Not sure how many folks have seen the show called Billions but it's a very realistic representation of how a fund like Appaloosa is (was) managed by David Tepper.  The TV show is overly dramatic and Tepper's temperament is nothing like Axe's but just like with Axe...EVERY really important decision is presented to, vetted, and approved by Tepper.

No executive in Tepper's organization will ever have the kind of power Chip Kelly had.

You are on the right track here.

Marty isn't the GM in any real sense of the word...nothing like John Lynch or Brandon Beane.  At this point Marty functions more as a manager of scouting combined with a PR position, he's the guy who goes on the radio, etc...

Player personnel decisions are now more of a collaborative/by-committee process vs. one guy making the call.

With all the glowing reviews of Coach Rhule, do we give credit to Hurney or Tepper for the hire? Last I remembered, Hurney carried the interview and Tepper sat back and agreed. Obviously it was Tepper's wallet that secured the deal though.

I mean, if you're asking me if I WANT to give Hurney credit..no. Do I have to in the interest of fairness since all available information seems to imply he definitely was all over recruiting Rhule to Carolina. Yeah.

I'm going to be way more interested to see what year two and beyond of Matt Rhule's coaching career looks like than year one. Lots of new coaches start out hot only to tail off once the rest of the league has film and scouting info on them.

We've seen what Rhule is capable of doing. The next question is whether he's also capable of keeping it consistent.

And yeah, part of that challenge might include replacing his young offensive prodigy.

Do they though? Kingsbury was ass last year. Teams much better. They haven’t changed poo but their personnel.......

Chud was ass as the Browns HC. 
 

Some HC’s ride the talent of a great QB for years. See Mike McCarthy. 
 

Some ride the talent of a stellar team (see Rivera). Even then, he isn’t a good HC. 
 

I believe some coaches just have it like Bill B and can turn chicken salad into chicken poo on defense. As long as he’s got a solid-great QB. 
 

Rhule is in that mold and can coach up players. Just needs a solid-great QB to finish it out.

Can you point to any concrete information that supports this or is it just your supposition of how things are now?  Genuinely curious if there is any factual evidence to support this idea, because it would make me feel better about our situation as an organization, but haven't seen anything other than people speculating that it works this way now.

I think worrying about Rhule being on the same trajectory as Kelly was is a bad comparison.  There are some fundamental differences in how they approach things.

• Does anybody ever remember Kelly saying any of his assistants were the reason for his success?
• Kelly was billed as an "offensive genius" with a system.  That historically has been to the NFL what the snake oil salesman rolling into town was in a western.  Systems tend to fail in the NFL, especially those as simplistic as "we are going to run as many offensive plays per game as possible," which was what Kelly's boiled down to. 
• Kelly was a cancer in his own locker room
• Kelly was egotistical enough to believe his system was so superior, it would work regardless of the talent, and he parted with talent in Philly for his own personal reasons.  He left the Philly roster in sad shape.  The fact they won a Super Bowl a couple of seasons later is a huge testimony to Pederson and Roseman.
• As such, Kelly underestimated the fact that he generally had a decided talent advantage most weeks in college, and perhaps that was the reason for his success.  Talent matters.
• Kelly never learned from his mistakes, usually doubling down.  He had an aha moment when Philly fired him and the only job offer was from arguably one of the 4 or 5 worst situations in the league at that point (San Francisco was a train wreck at that point).  But by then, the die was cast and he was in a situation where his own failure was assured. 

Most of these are personality traits.  Rhule's personality and statements thus far seem far more likely to stick in the NFL than Kelly.  Could that change?  Sure.  But personality traits don't change quickly.
