did hurney torpedo himself with teddy bridgewater?

You could be right but my understanding was that Joe Brady was the driving force in getting Teddy brought in (i.e. Brady didn't want the job without Teddy).

Not arguing with the decision to move on from Hurney but I personally think it's completely unrelated to Teddy

I think you are correct, but Hurney overpaid.

I think Philly has a good question, but needs to broaden it a bit:  What made Tepper fire Hurney NOW?  And I think it has a lot to do with the Bridgewater contract.  A player like that-you give him a 1-year deal--not a 3-year deal.

And then there was his affinity for throwing huge second contracts at Running Backs.  So we have a RB locked down, when you make it difficult to sign your RT.  Smart?

Think Pittsburgh--always a good OL, defense, and WRs.  Frankly, many of their RBs were not high draft picks.

But there is this:  If it seemed as if Rhule and Brady had huge voices in the draft and free agency, then maybe they did.  Maybe Tepper wants a GM who will resist the impulsive decisions of the coaches.  For example---how many Temple/Baylor players are on this roster?  Do you really think you can win in the NFL with players from Temple and Baylor?   What was Hurney's role?

Tepper has hindsight now, and he knows that Marty could have traded up with the NY Giants to get Herbert.  We were 3 picks away.  Instead, we sat back and took a NT at #7.  I like Brown, but he is not going to win you many games like a good QB would.

Finally, the offensive line has been in shambles now for several years, and Pittsburgh always has good OLs.   That has to drive Tepper crazy.

I see the move. He wants to be in position to pick whomever he wants.

Could be "last straw" but I don't think it broke the camels back alone.

I have a hunch that Marty sold Tepper on being able to compete this year...if we only had "one more piece".  That's how Marty looked at the team always.  One piece away.

Once Tepper finally saw what was really out there on the field, it became obvious that Ron wasn't the only issue...GM was as well.

I believe it was Persons who reported after the draft that Rhule wanted to trade down, and Hurney overruled him and took Brown (safe pick). Imagine if we had gotten a 2021 1st in a trade down last year. How much would that help if we wanted to, say try to trade up for a QB we really liked (in this upcoming draft)?

I don't know what the final straw was, but the marriage of Tepper's super analytical driven approach and Marty's "I'm not a big analytics or statistics guy" approach always seemed destined to fail, Hurney's overall terribleness aside.

We were mathematically eliminated from the playoffs...yet again...as of yesterday.

To me, that's the most obvious explanation for the timing.

Tepper's an a--hole (and generally proud of that fact).

Marty is, by all accounts, a very nice guy. Just a lousy GM.

I gotta believe Tepper has been thinking about this for a while. Our being eliminated from the playoffs gives him a catalyst to go ahead and do it now.

There was talk this past offseason that Marty still wanted us to be competitive whereas others were focused on getting the rebuilding process started.

So yeah, it's plausible.

Maybe Marty went completely rogue in the offseason?

I mean, if you are trying to build for the future, most of the moves this past offseason were head scratchers....at best.

Tepper not being able to tear off the band aid has hampered us greatly since he took over.

No. That was just hurney being hurney. There a reason no other NFL team ever hired him.

Oh, he's terrible, no doubt...you won't find another Hurney Hater on this board with a stronger dislike than me.

Just seems that all this crap from Tepper about "working together" of however he put it makes me wonder if Marty signed CMC and Shaq and kept KK on board by his call only...and maybe Rhule wanted to go a different direction?

Nah. Two of three of those came before Rhule was even a potential HC and even rhule is smart enough to realize not signing CMC was a death wish for more reasons than one, especially with getting rid of Cam. This kind of talk is just misguided at best, not calling you out, just the talk.

Why was the extension for CMC needed?  He had two more years on his deal.

I'm just throwing out ideas...reason being, I DID NOT expect him to be fired before the end of the season, and was scared he was going to run the draft yet again this offseason.

Because they were trying to use the mahomes mold. Sign now for what will be stupid less in 5 years.

I figured black Monday. Today is a pretty clear message to the entire building.
