Will Patrick Mahomes play this weekend?

I think it's plausible at least.

The scary, tinfoil hat version of the story would be that he has a concussion but they're saying he doesn't so that he can play.

I don't really think Andy Reid is that kind of person though.

The choked out theory? No, that isn't really plausible. I could come up behind you and slip you into a chokehold for roughly that time(0.5-1 sec) and you wouldn't enjoy it but it would hardly be enough to even make you start to lose consciousness.

Sorry. The "neck injury vs concussion" theory.

Choked out? Hell no.

Yes

I know we like to blame Ron for Cam playing through injuries but that was on Cameron too. Sure it's on the coach to make the best decision for the long term health of the players but as long as this is a multi billion dollar sport with coaches getting paid millions, with promises of glory to the athletes they're gonna play.

Mahomes is gonna do everything in his power to play Sunday. I'd be more surprised to see him out.

Will he play well? That's another question.

Yeah, that's certainly possible. Nerve injuries around the spine are crazy. I have flare ups of sciatica in my lower back and that can completely overwhelming all the feeling in your lower body. I have heard stories of having similar instances in your neck and how debilitating it can be.

Reliable local KC source:

"Brachial stun" is essentially what it looked like and what the symptoms were consistent with, at least according to several medical opinions I've seen when reading about Mahomes stuff in the last day.

All of this from legit KC reporters; I doubt he suffered a concussion. Got put in the protocol because of his reaction after the hit consistent with the official NFL Concussion protocol guidelines https://www.nfl.com/playerhealthandsafety/health-and-wellness/player-care/concussion-protocol-return-to-participation-protocol

Quote

When a player receives an impact to the head, the player goes into the Concussion Protocol if:

  • the player exhibits or reports symptoms or signs suggestive of a concussion or stinger (a nerve pinch injury); or,
  • the team Athletic Trainer, booth ATC spotter, team Physician, NFL game official, coach, teammate, sideline Unaffiliated Neurotrauma Consultant (UNC) or booth UNC initiates the protocol.

Now that he's in the protocol, there is no way he can play unless he passes all of their specific steps, so it's definitely no guarantee that Mahomes plays. But if he didn't actually suffer a concussion, which seems likely, then there really shouldn't be any concerns about him passing the protocols. He's already passed all the initial tests and will likely move through it and be cleared by Friday/Saturday.

I hope that is accurate. It would be a big shame not to see that monster, QB vs. QB matchup.

I don't think they even carry a third QB, do they? So what other option is there? IDK who they plan on making an emergency signing if/when Mahomes can't go, either.

I just don't see it as reasonable for Mahomes to be playing unless he really didn't get a bad concussion. You just paid this man half a billion dollars. Don't turn him into a mush head this early on.

Trade them Teddy for anybody! make it so...TODAY!

I've seen that in a couple of different places including some Kansas City news sources.

I haven't seen anything official yet though, or any reports from major sources like Rapoport, Schefter or Breer.

If you saw him stand up after that hit, it seems pretty clear that it was a concussion. Poor guy was wobbling.

Matt Moore I believe is on their practice squad. No idea how Henne beat him out for the backup job... Moore was great in those starts last year, getting a big win against MN that got them home field advantage and contributed to them ultimately winning the SB.

Henne wasn't atrocious in his stint replacing him. For all we know, Matt Moore's time in the NFL may just be near completion. Remember when Derek Anderson was the "best backup QB in the NFL" and very valuable for us.....until he wasn't.
