ESPN's Jeremy Fowler: The sense around the league is the Panthers will be competitive in trade talks surrounding Matt Stafford

Staffords worth a second round pick, maybe a third on top of that.

This is my reserve price on him. I think he's a very good QB. And even though the positional value for QBs is sky high, especially given the sort of turnover we're going to see among that group this offseason, I'm not giving up a 1st for Stafford.

EDIT: I could maybe be persuaded that Stafford is worth a late first round pick. But definitely not 8. And I doubt Detroit would accept a future 1st.  And there's no guarantee that if we traded a future first, that it would end up being that much later in the round.

I'd be willing to trade a 2nd this year and a conditional 3rd in 2022, with the following conditions:

1. Detroit takes Bridgewater in the deal.

2. Pick becomes a 2022 2nd round pick if the Panthers make the playoffs AND Stafford plays more than 60% of the snaps at QB.

3. Pick becomes a 2022 1st round pick if the Panthers make the NFC Championship AND Stafford plays more than 60% of the snaps at QB. If the Panthers make it that far, it's essentially a 2nd round pick anyhow.

In other words, the better Stafford does, the better the pick is for Detroit, but increasingly towards the bottom end of the round.

I definitely like the idea of pick conditionality, but I'm not sure Detroit would agree to it.

And then there's the issue of Teddy. I'm of the belief that including him in a trade means we will have to include more draft capital, not less.  Yes, that's right, I think Teddy has negative value.  His contract is not super onerous in a vacuum, but including him in a trade is basically asking a team to give up a player of value and accept a salary dump, because Teddy doesn't have very much positive value/isn't worth his contract.

I agree with you about Teddy and his contract. From Detroit's perspective, the possibility of getting a 1st round pick next year (albeit less likely) has to be attractive. Having said that, you are likely right that Detroit would want more in the deal, but I think it's a decent foundation for a discussion.

The good news is, swapping Teddy and Stafford is a cap neutral transaction. Both teams are paying ~20 to each QB next year, so it wouldn't impact either teams salary caps. Having Teddy there to be the bridge to a newly drafted QB would certainly help them, as well.

If I'm the Lions, I laugh you out the door. There will be 3 maybe 4 other teams looking at Stafford and atleast 2 will probably offer a 1st pick +.

Ya I don't see any of the vets ending up here. Everyone is going to be trying to pull a Brees(Old school) Brady(This year) now. Nor should we want them. Really should just stick it out another year with Teddy and accumulate/use all the picks to round out the team. We aren't competing for playoffs next year baring a miracle anywho. 8-8ish here we come.

harbingers and the terrible, horrible, no-good, very bad opinion

You don't consider Detroit's first demand laughable?

No. Historically, QBs of Stafford reputation don't become available often. As a looks, Sam frieken Bradford braught in a first round pick 3 straight years from 3 different teams. Kyle Allen got a 5th round pick for being aweful. I think people are vastly underrating Stafford's standing in the league and undervaluing him simply because it hurts to let go of a first round pick.

Just because other teams are dumb doesn't mean we should join them in their stupidity.  No way I would give up #8 this year for him.  Next year's we can talk.

I understand, and I'm not arguing we should give the pick to get him. I am just saying, reports are we are going to give a serious push to get him. Don't be surprised if that offer includes our first.

Maybe something like.

Pick 8, Bridgewater, future 3.

Stafford, 2021 4th.

I would say deal, gets Teddy 2 yds away from this team and salary gone. Sign me up

I'm not going to lose sleep over it either way.  I'm just ready for someone other than Marty harney making the call.

    • I can say that I have defended Canales because I get that they are doing all they can to keep from looking like idiots for drafting Bryce, from the trade up to signing $150m guards to drafting XL and Brooks etc---nothing seems to work.  And Hiring Canales was part of the Bryce Young rehab program, so so he can't really decide to "move on."  That has to come from Morgan and Tepper. Personally, I think Bryce is due for an injury.  He is small, he is not thick, and he has been a LOT more healthy than most any other QB has who has endured so much pressure.  The thing that bothers me is this---Bryce really does not go through his progressions quickly.  He locks on to his presnap read and stays locked onto him for too long--he seems to fail to anticipate the WR/TE's positioning on the play before the cut--for example, if the WR is running a dig and the CB has his back to the inside of the field, he should be open for a second or less just after the cut.  He seems to wait until the cut has been made before deciding, then checking down quickly while moving in the pocket. OL:  There seems to be a lack of communication--is that on Mays?  Watch this team presnap--they seem a bit confused at times.   I can almost predict the success rate of the play by watching the center and QB before the snap.
    • Anyone else remember back in 2010 when Fox piloted having music under the in-game replays during one of Carolina's games? Not the commercial bumpers but the actual replay clips that the announcers would talk over. Pretty sure it was vs the 49ers. And it was terrible. Point being, Carolina continues being so bad that we get the networks trying things out during their games.
    • Is it bad I found this video more hilarious than pathetic? I am still laughing at that one play where half the people on the field ran into each other and Bryce still couldn't see Chuba wide open... Also laughing at Cade blocking nobody and somehow losing his cleat Man this offense is a poo show
