So...Terry Rozier.

Still a bad contract for a mediocre player?  Always fun going back and seeing some overreactions.

I think I was spot on.  Besides from the obvious of being 4 years younger than Kemba, and $16M cheaper...I mentioned he could improve, and he obviously definitely has, actually playing much better than Kemba.  Plenty people were worried that this was going to keep us in the late lottery, I mentioned we would still land a top pick, and we got LaMelo.

While Kemba is averaging 17.2 PPG, on a FG% of .384, 3PT% of .379

Rozier is averaging 21.1 PPG, on a FG% of .496, 3PT% .460

Although Rozier plays 5 minutes more per game than Kemba, they still both each average 15 shot attempts per game.  Also, Rozier averages less turnovers on more playing time.  Let's not forget either how well he plays on defense.  One spot he does fall behind Kemba Walker is on free throws.

Thank you Kupchak

To be fair, hard to blame our over reactions seeing how bad the team was ran. Mediocre was also saved by lucking into Ball and the 3rd pick. Rozier is a baller, and definitely not a bad pickup in hindsight. However, at the time it looked like a keep things at mediocre move.

Nice job though on the original call, you nailed it and then some.

Yeah, a lot of the overreaction was due to how the team had historically been ran and a legacy of bad moves before Kupchack got here.  I always liked Terry, and told many of my friends I would like to sign him from Boston after he had that huge playoff run, but I definitely didnt want him at the price we signed him at the time.  I acknowledge when I'm wrong.  He is definitely worth what he's getting paid and then some.  To me, Terry, Miles, and Melo are my core moving forward.  I've said it elsewhere, but Terry is like a slightly shorter, much better shooting DWade.  He is an absolute dog.

In hindsight it was an incredible move by the Hornets and a terrible move by the Celtics. But there were a bunch of factors and I don't think anyone knew at the time that Kemba's knee was a ticking time bomb or could've foreseen Rozier becoming an elite spot up shooter like he's become here. I completely understand people being upset at the time, because as others have said the Hornets had made so many bad moves up to that point, why would anyone expect the Rozier acquisition to be any different? I think by now Kupchak has proved himself trustworthy and I won't get upset with any moves he makes until they're proven to be bad, because he's been on absolute fire the last 2 years.

I never understood the heat he was getting.. with all the terrible contracts we had been loaded down with for so long I must have been jaded because I was in the camp of - "at least he contributes and brings something to the table"..

now I trying to lock him down longterm.. Ball - Terry - Hayward - Miles is a winning backcourt with solid wings.. we just gotta upgrade the bigs [which has been said at nauseam]

A lot of the anger was the mismanagement of the Kemba trade. TR looks great, but that doesn’t diminish the fact they should have traded Kemba at the deadline.. you could have done that and still signed Rozier as an FA if you wanted to go in that direction. I still think it was mismanagement of a valuable asset.

    • The panthers are such a trash organization at this point that all the huddle can do is argue about which panthers team is historically the worst…good times.
    • Well, hope they're not worried about a torn Labrum or Rotator Cuff, as someone who went through that myself, I know those don't have anything show up on X-Rays but from the MRI, so this is kinda a nothing update, hope it's not a tear or his season is already over if they decide to do surgery now. Which is basically what would be needed to get him to 100% for the start of next season's training camp if it's a labrum.  If he plays the season with it and then does surgery, he's not going to be ready for camp and probably not the start of the season either.
    • I always try to not pay much attention to a team’s preseason win/loss record. The 1982 Washington and 2021 LA Rams both lost every game in the preseason and went on to win the Super Bowl, whereas the 2008 Detroit Lions and 2017 Cleveland Browns both won every game in reason and went on to lose every regular season game. There’s many examples of teams that lose in preseason that go on to have good seasons, but equally there are teams that lose in preseason and that continues in the regular season. Which will we be?  I think our floor is a handful of wins, while our ceiling will probably be around the 9-10 win mark. The latter will require significant improvement from the whole team and coaching staff, and will also need Bryce to play like the QB we drafted him to be. I want to be optimistic and predict a winning season, but it’s really difficult as a Panthers fan!
