Total cost for Teddy

Looks like we are going to eat $7m of Teddy's contract this year.

That would bring the total cost for 1 year of Teddy to $31m.  $8m in 2020 salary, $1m in workout and game bonuses.  $15m signing bonus.  $7m of guaranteed salary this year we are turning into another bonus.

Also we lost a 3rd, from missing out on a comp pick, but we did get a 6th back.

Hindsight is always 20/20 but fair to say it was a terrible decision.

Entirely disagree.

No deal:

We pay Teddy $21 mil 2021, still on the books for 2022

With a post-J1 cut:

2021: $15 mil dead cap, clear $7.9 mil in cap space

2022: $5 mil dead cap and we’ve got $21 mil more to spend.

With deal:

2021: Gain 6th rounder, gain $6 mil in cap (yes though more dead cap is eaten that was GOING TO HIM ANYWAYS)

2022: $26 mil freed

There is nothing to disagree with, you are looking at cap space relative to what would have been his cap cost for this year and next if he would have stayed on the team.

My post is stating how much we paid him for his one year of play.  If we are really responsible for $7m this year we will spend $31m for his one year of play.  $24m has already been paid to him, and it looks like we will have to pay him $7m more.

Signing Teddy in the first place and how he performed was a bad deal. The trade to Denver is a good deal. We have paid Teddy way to much for how he performed.

I hope he does well in Denver and wish him the best but I am glad he is gone.

Oh I misread, if you're saying this being his total cost for his panthers' stay then yep, totally agree.  Thought you were saying the trade was misguided.

Nope, the trade makes sense, and we will save a little bit of money.

Looks to be a good trade for Denver, if his salary is only $3m this year.

Also looks like this 2022 salary voided as part of the deal according to www.spotrac.com .  That might mean if he walks they might get a comp pick for him.

They gave up a 6th round pick for Teddy at $3m and they might get a better pick back if he walks.  That is how you do a "bridge" QB.

Short has no business still being on there. That was the no brainer of all no brainers last year. I can at least excuse Teddy if they actually thought he’d be good but Short made no sense at all because he wasn’t close to worth the extra $13M.

going to be interesting on here when we cant complain about dead cap anymore.

It will be nice. You always have dead cap (most of it is built into overall cap hits), but Marty was truly impressive. $30M of our $39M in 2021 dead cap was from people signed in 2020 or not cut in 2020. I mean that’s just awful decision making when you are cutting people 1 year after signing them to starter deals and do it multiple times every year.

yeah deadcap was pretty consistent and cancerous here. Im excited to see what the team will do with a cap where 85% + is available to be utilized.
