The Ohio State / Darnold QB Challenge

Perhaps this makes you feel a little better:

Ohio State QBs that played in NFL:

Don Scott
Johnny Borton
Dave Leggett
Frank Kremblas
Ron Maciejowski
Greg Hare
Cornelius Greene
Art Schlichter
Jim Karsatos
Tom Tupa
Kent Graham
Bobby Hoying
Joe Germaine
Steve Bellisari
Craig Krenzel
Troy Smith
Terrelle Pryor
Braxton Miller
Cardale Jones

Dwayne Haskins

Remember, many of these were first rounders--franchise saviors.

So here is the challenge:  Pick ONE of the QBs from Ohio State's all time QB list who you'd trade for Darnold if both were  age 24.  Make a lengthy list if necessary.  Use an extra sheet of paper if you need to do so.

Art Schlicter came into the league with so much fanfare but, alas, he was JAOSQ... just another Ohio State quarterback.

This doesn’t work. Different coaches/schemes and players. Name a UT player that was great before Manning, LSU before Burrow, Texas Tech before Mahomes, and Clemson before Watson. It’s so hard to hit one a QB, few schools are going to have one or more that were great. Take away Carson Palmer and Darnold’s USC school isn’t looking too great either... Leinart, Sanchez, Barkley, Cassel, Booty (best name), Rodney Peete!

Bengals are probably happy they didn’t let Russell, Mettenberger, Flynn etc discourage them from drafting Burrow. It has to be case by case...

I asked a simple question--who would you trade for?  The rest is an inference as to what this means, one made by you, not me. Since Palmer and Darnold and I would argue Peete are better than anyone on the OSU list to date--the point to be made is--USC QBs have been mostly busts, but their top 3 are better than OSU's best.

I mean I agree Ohio State qbs have been horrible but what about USC qbs. Woah two colleges that don’t produce qbs that well.

😁Well, Carson Palmer was pretty good--and I am only asking if there is an OSU QB you would trade for Sam Darnold (a USC QB) if they were both 24.  That alone suggests USC QBs are better if you can't.

You said this would make us feel better.

Why would answering this question make us feel better?

Oh no I get it. You can basically do the same with Alabama outside of Tua (who is still a question mark). It’s better to have a young QB that might not be terrible versus one we know is terrible.
If we our bad this year I hope Mitch doesn’t prevent us from drafting Howell.

Should have been more clear--by not drafting Fields like so many wanted to do so--well, if you look at history, Fields would have to be the exception to a pretty consistent rule--although he may do well, they said the same thing about several other OSU QBs like Miller, Pryor, Smith, and Haskins--even Jones to some.

It really is amazing--Oregon before last year had a bunch of busts all the back to Fouts.  Bama QBs?  Namath.  UCLA--after Aikman?  It used to be Miami and Maryland, remember that far back?  Now you can throw Clemson, NC State (Gabriel, Rivers, and a bunch of low-end starters), etc.

Trying to discredit another young QB to make ourselves feel better about our starter probably isn't a good thing...

Well, I am discrediting the pipeline, not the player---he was not on the list.  And during the draft, isnt that all we do?

    • I know it's only been training camp and one preseason game, but I think T-Mac has already shown his floor to be exactly what I said about him in the pre-draft process. That his floor if he never improves his game, is as one of the best #2 WRs in the NFL, if not even still a low end #1 (i.e. a 25th-ish best WR in the league). I think it's safe to say he's already established himself as our #1, and there are only a small handful of teams in the league where I don't think he'd be their starting #2 WR in Week 1. Bengals (Higgins), Dolphins (Waddle), Eagles (Smith), Bucs (Godwin if healthy), Rams (Adams) are really the only teams where I think he'd be the #3 as a rookie in Week 1.  A few others like the Lions (Williams), Bears (Odunze), Seahawks (Kupp), Commanders (Deebo), where he'd be the 2b to start the season, just because they're vets and/or already have a year or two of experience with their team/QB. And even having said that, I think by year 2, he's better than every one of those players (And no, I'm not saying he's already going to be better than a prime version of Adams, just whatever he'll be at 33 next year), and same goes for Kupp, but that's more because it seems like his body might be quitting on him in a way that hasn't happened to Adams (yet).
    • Well to be fair, Horn not practicing right now to let his stitches heal up from a car accident isn't something that should be concerning.  Sure, you don't want him missing practice leading into the season, but it's one that once healed, won't have lingering affects or fear of re-injuring it, it was just bad luck.
    • Quality backups are absolutely important. This franchise has been plagued with depth problems. That said, there is a little bit of dismay that Mays can't beat out a 1-legged man, and all the talk going into the off-season was how BC would certainly be gone since he had position versatility.  In the end, it doesn't matter too awfully much, as I would be shocked to no end if Corbett makes it through the season. We know what we have in reserve, and that should surely be better than trying to sign random fat guys mid season to try and take over.
