Huddlers: Sam Darnold has all the physical talent to be a franchise QB! His talent is worth the gamble!

*shows Darnold's average at best athleticism testing*

Huddlers: LOL! Physical talent isn't everything!

Le sigh...

Where’s arm strength on that sheet? I may be wrong but that’s a big part of physical talent for QBs.

No one I here has said that he’s a running QB and when has that predicted guys like Brady, Manning, Brees, etc.?

I know Darnold is a big risk but no one likes Sam because of his RAS score.

You know who had the strongest arm at the Combine in 2019? Will Grier. Not just the highest velocity that year, but velocity numbers that would hold their own in any draft class.

Darnold didn't throw at the Combine.

Did you just post a conversation with yourself?

I missed where someone was touting Darnold's RAS score.

As  @stbugs said, the RAS score doesn't measure for pocket QBs very well.

You want Grier to be QB1?

Linville for the past year: Teddy will never be a franchise QB cause he just doesn't have the arm strength to make the necessary throws.

*Panthers trade for Sam Darnold*

Linville: Well...arm strength really isn't that important ya know.  Just look at Will Grier!!! *mic drop*

Le sigh indeed...

And? That has nothing to do with what you said. RAS score and “athletic” ability has never been any of the excitement around Darnold. I’m as skeptical as you but any positive talk has been around his arm not being Teddy noodle and his ability to throw on the run. Neither of those are RAS scores.

Its going to be long preseason, and probably first half of the season until Darnold flops or shuts his critics up.

We're going to be hearing bitching about Darnold the whole time.

Here's PFF saying the Oline sucks, so Darnold will suck:

Monson: The Carolina Panthers offensive line is in danger of derailing the Sam Darnold reclamation project | NFL News, Rankings and Statistics | PFF

Here's BR saying we should trade for Minshew cause, well, Darnold sucks:

1 Trade Each NFL Team Should Offer Before 2021 Training Camp Starts | Bleacher Report | Latest News, Videos and Highlights

Here's BR again, this time ranking our entire roster as worse than the Jets, nearly worst in the league mostly because, well, Darnold sucks:

Ranking the 5 Worst NFL Rosters Entering 2021 Season | Bleacher Report | Latest News, Videos and Highlights

Most of our offseason grades were lowered because of the Darnold trade.  Even the draft grades were lower because we passed on Fields.

If you're looking for more Darnold complaints, read half of @LinvilleGorge's posts.  Though he was posting better there for a while.

It wasn't my idea to trade for the guy, I wanted Fields.

But he's our QB1 now, so I'm going to try to make the best of it.

Teddy's arm was significantly better than I anticipated. Honestly, of Teddy had the guts he could be a Cousins/Goff level QB. He has about that level of arm. He just doesn't have the guts to make the throws.

And no, you completely missed my point here. Meanwhile, I never questioned Darnold's arm. I question Darnold between the ears.

The question about Darnold has always been his mental abilities.

Which, he probably should have never been drafted where he was considering his overall derth of actual experience playing QB at any level.

Those reps matter a LOT for developing a player. Right now the bulk of the reps in his entire quarterback career were with the Jets.

Compare that to someone like Trevor Lawrence, who basically grew up playing football and quarterback. That is tens of thousands of reps and hours that he is already ahead of a guy like Darnold in his development.

Doesn't mean he can't bridge that gap but everyone seemed to have looked past how little experience he actually had coming into the NFL.

Darnold between the ears IS the issue. This means his athletic ability is not. That chart doesn’t work well for QBs. I think the point is Darnold has more than enough athletic ability to be a solid QB. Arm strength and escapability appear to be above average. Does he run a 4.2, or crush the cone drill? Probably not, but that’s not really relevant for the position.

His physical tools are fairly run of the mill for a starting QB. Not a minus, but there aren't any real special traits either. That's an upgrade from Teddy's below average traits, but a lot of Panthers fans have seemingly convinced themselves that Darnold is a Rodgers type talent that has been squandered in NY. I just don't think that's at all accurate.
