Why not trade for Tyrell Crosby?

Recommended Posts

When the Detroit Lions selected Penei Sewell right before the Panthers selection, a lot of us felt a little let down. He was a sure fire starting left tackle for years to come.  The Lions already had a top 12 LT in Taylor Decker who remains with the team, so the pick almost didn't make sense at the time. It was announced that Sewell would be switching positions to play RT, a position the Lions already had a Oregon player in Tyrell Crosby, who performed admirably at Left Tackle when Decker was injured last year. He also played left tackle during his college career at Oregon. He is set to make 2.1 million this year on the final year of his contract. He could play opposite wherever the front office staff decides to move Moton. He is at least solid competition.

For now, Crosby is slated to be the Lions 6th man on the O-line with position versatility to play either tackle or guard spot. However, he could very well be our answer at left or right tackle. The Lions stealing Sewell right before our pick, could possibly work out in our favor if we are able to make a decent trade offer.

Smart teams trade superfluous talent on the final year of their contracts. It is how you build draft capital and manage the salary cap.

Smart teams DO NOT trade away coveted quality offensive line depth.  Just because they bring in a new starter doesn't mean those guys will stay healthy or that they still will not rotate other guys in.  What happens if Sewell gets hurt or the other starter goes down?  What happens if Sewell sucks?

Devil's advocate..... We are talking about the Lions after all.

I disagree. Yeah, ideally you'd want that quality depth and if they were a contender it would be an argument to keep him as depth. As is, the Lions are likely more of a contender for the #1 overall pick than they are a SB berth. They'd be much better off trading him to bolster another roster spot or to get more draft capital IMO.

So if we already had quality players at both offensive tackles positions, you would be cool with trading our 3rd best T, just for the hell of it?  Have we not all seen how quickly these guys can go down, and then if you do not have a quality back-up you are completely screwed...

We don't have to trade draft capital.  How about a player at a position where we have plenty of depth. Possibly drafting Terrace Marshall Jr. made Robby Anderson expendable. Lions could definitely use a WR. We could possibly even pick up draft picks with this trade and clear cap space in the process.

Not for the hell of it, but if you're not a contender with lots of holes elsewhere IMO it would be dumb not to trade the guy. Yeah, were drafting in the top 10 again, but at least we have a backup OT that is the jealousy of the league! Winning!

    • I can say that I have defended Canales because I get that they are doing all they can to keep from looking like idiots for drafting Bryce, from the trade up to signing $150m guards to drafting XL and Brooks etc---nothing seems to work.  And Hiring Canales was part of the Bryce Young rehab program, so so he can't really decide to "move on."  That has to come from Morgan and Tepper. Personally, I think Bryce is due for an injury.  He is small, he is not thick, and he has been a LOT more healthy than most any other QB has who has endured so much pressure.  The thing that bothers me is this---Bryce really does not go through his progressions quickly.  He locks on to his presnap read and stays locked onto him for too long--he seems to fail to anticipate the WR/TE's positioning on the play before the cut--for example, if the WR is running a dig and the CB has his back to the inside of the field, he should be open for a second or less just after the cut.  He seems to wait until the cut has been made before deciding, then checking down quickly while moving in the pocket. OL:  There seems to be a lack of communication--is that on Mays?  Watch this team presnap--they seem a bit confused at times.   I can almost predict the success rate of the play by watching the center and QB before the snap.
    • Anyone else remember back in 2010 when Fox piloted having music under the in-game replays during one of Carolina's games? Not the commercial bumpers but the actual replay clips that the announcers would talk over. Pretty sure it was vs the 49ers. And it was terrible. Point being, Carolina continues being so bad that we get the networks trying things out during their games.
    • Is it bad I found this video more hilarious than pathetic? I am still laughing at that one play where half the people on the field ran into each other and Bryce still couldn't see Chuba wide open... Also laughing at Cade blocking nobody and somehow losing his cleat Man this offense is a poo show
