Philip Rivers might be available…

In December…

Philip Rivers said he would not rule out returning to the NFL in December or January.

Rivers noted that he would not have made weight had he been asked to report to a team for training camp. He is currently coaching high school football and would likely want to see his first season as a coach all the way through before rejoining the league. That would put him on teams' radars around December. If Rivers isn't in playing shape and will be preoccupied with coaching for a few months, it's unlikely that he finds a home in the NFL this year. However, if a team were desperate enough, they would turn to Rivers before any currently available free agent. Rivers threw 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions while completing 68 percent of his passes in 2020. He may not be close to his prime, but Rivers would still be a serviceable emergency option for a team that sustains a quarterback injury late in the year.

This is one of those, if the stars align kinda things. lf you need him, when he's available, that's cool. If you need him, and he is not yet available, well dang.

But, if you need him, and he is ready. Well then, no for me. I mean sure, he could probably help Sam and all. But by Dec. we should know whether Sam is it or not. So...I lost mt train of tho....

Why is that so hard for you to believe? He had a pretty good year last year.

Not only is his arm completely shot, it would be a major blow to the confidence of Sam Darnold. Even if Darnold isn't the answer, the answer is not digging up an ancient relic to try and progress a young team.

Did you read the OP? He won't be available until Dec. It is a pipe dream anywho. But he did have a pretty good year last year. Not sure why that is so hard to swallow. Are you mad at him or something?

By Dec. we will know what we have in Sam. Maybe Rivers can mentor him for a while? Who knows, maybe he can help?

You must be a super fanboy or something.

I don't like or dislike him, he just has no business ever being in a Panthers uniform at this point in both his career and the history of the franchise.

Thinking this through a bit. Two likely scenarios come to mind.

Scenario 1

Jets Darnold and Panthers Darnold are identical. If this is the case we go into December with 4 or 5 wins and a couple fried huddle servers.   Lucky for Igo, he can pick up replacements during Black Friday sale.   We get Rivers, put on our rally caps and hope to sneak into playoffs. But we don’t.  The team seems ruderless but manages to get another win or two.  Rivers goes back to AL to for winter/spring HS football workouts.  Then we get to spend the whole off-season whining about not tanking for the next great QB we won’t be drafting.

Scenario 2

Panthers Darnold plays admirably but gets injured late in the season.  We bring Rivers in and make or just barely miss the playoffs.  Huddle server gets fried in December, Igo misses Black Friday sale and pays full price.  Rivers goes back to AL to for winter/spring HS football workouts.  Then we get to spend the whole off-season whining about not tanking for the next great QB we won’t be drafting.

Or Scenario 3. Sammy plays well, we make the Playoffs, and the Huddle servers still go down.

    • I think i lurked a few years before joining in 2017. Probably during the 2015 season
    • https://nfltraderumors.co/2026-nfl-draft-grades-for-all-32-teams/      Grade: B+ Best Pick: Sam Hecht Biggest Reach (consensus rank): Jackson Kuwatch (NR) It's easy to love what Carolina did. The Panthers traded four times but ended the draft with the same number of selections that they started with and in approximately the same ranges. They did not take a player ahead of the consensus until Kuwatch at No. 227, and it's easy to see how he fell through the cracks playing at Miami of Ohio. He's a high-end athlete, though, and has a chance to develop, which is a fine profile for a seventh-rounder. Freeling and Brazzell also checked the high-end athleticism upside boxes for the Panthers. Carolina let the board come to them in the first round and could have a long-term solution at left tackle, which is a hard position to fill. Brazzell slid because of some maturity concerns as well as the difficulty in projecting receivers from Tennessee's Mickey Mouse offense. At 6-4, 200 pounds and 4.37 in the 40, though, the upside is undeniable. On top of that, the landed three starters on Day 3. Normally that's a high and unrealistic bar, but Hecht and Wheatley were both firmly inside the top 100 on the consensus board and have paths to win starting competitions. Lee fits the scheme well and has some interesting traits as an outside corner. What stopped me from a full-out A grade is not loving the Hunter pick, though he does fill a need to replace DT A'Shawn Robinson. There were prospects at other needs positions I would have been more jazzed about. The Brazzell pick is also an interesting risk for a team that's still in building mode, even coming off an NFC South title. Still, I'm nitpicking
