The Athletic looks at Darnold and Wentz

It kind of makes it sound like he was their 3rd option (mentioned Stafford and Watson couldn’t materialize) and a bit of an afterthought to me. Don’t get me wrong he looks the part, but they seemed caught off guard almost and his tape while looking at another player’s tape. I mean he was a top 5 pick and a starter for three years. I would think someone on this staff would have known about his ability considering their expressed need of moving on from Teddy. I agree with most people on here that’s it all mental with him and he seems very coachable.

Well remember, in the context of the time he wouldn't necessarily have been a "thought" at all.

Darnold wasn't a free agent, and the Jets hadn't made any definitive statements about whether they were wanting to trade him yet.

Other teams made trade inquiries, but the Jets response was always that they wanted to go through all their evaluations before making a decision. A lot of teams weren't willing to wait. We were.

Yeah that makes sense. Our staff should have been aware of his ability though and inquired about a QB struggling 3 years with a team that has one of the top picks. The writer just kind of makes it sound like we stumbled into this deal after failing to get two other choices. I don’t necessarily think that’s the case.

Well, when a team isn't openly shopping a player, somebody else can come up and say "Hey would  you trade us this guy?"

That's pretty much what I think happened here.

That's why the QB Coach is on record as trying to fix his footwork...

I'm not saying that they didn't need to change his mindset too - but that's why you have the different tiers of coaches. HC and OC will mostly be interested in his decision making. QB Coach (and any position coach) will mostly be interested in his mechanics.

Both needed adjustment, and it looks like both are being adjusted. The raw material is there in abundance.

Yeah his feet are not going with him as he goes through his progressions.

Everyone knew he wasn't their first choice. The fans that choose to believe that are gulping Kool Aid at a rate that will end in beetus.

It is what it is. If it works out, awesome. If it doesn't......well.....I guess we are on QB search #3 in three seasons.

I said from the beginning it appears he was their 3rd choice. That one writer wrote an article saying how we were in contact with the Jets GM for a while and we’re always high on Darnold. This makes it seem more like they didn’t even know who he really was until the offseason. Maybe the truth is somewhere in between?

“Let Christian, let those guys carry the brunt of it,” Rhule said of their message to Darnold. “And you just go out there and do your thing. When you watch the great quarterbacks, they do that. They trust their players to make plays.”

This is what I want to see. A good example of this was last night when Brady hit Gronkowski 5 yards off the LoS and he lumbered his way into the endzone. Just get the ball to your playmakers in space.

My jury's still out on all of those things honestly.

Is Sam Darnold going to be a great quarterback? I don't know.

Is Matt Rhule an NFL head coach? I don't know.

Is David Tepper a good owner? I don't know.

I'm hoping this season gives me some clarity on all of those things, and I hope the answers are positive.

We'll see.

Nah not all Matt Rhule and staff obviously have a good eye for talent he even found some gems last year with Marty handicapping him. You don’t *always* have to be the contrarian my guy!

Well, they wouldn't exactly be studying him unless he was an opponent during the season. I can't blame them for not being super familiar as first year coaches

I want to hope.

However, I can't shag the nagging feeling that Tepper AND Rhule were bad choices and all of this is going to blow up in our face.

They were actually scouting another player, a defender whose game film happened to be against Darnold.

Don't think anyone's ever said who that defender was.

Not contrarian at all...just cautious.

I grant the drafts look nice so far, but I also remember Keary Colbert looking pretty good as a rookie too. Will any of our current guys be like that? Don't think so, but you never know.

Dont take it as a downer though. There's plenty of reasons to be optimistic  It's just my nature to be a "wait and see" guy.
