Exactly. What part of paying a marginal quarterback 30 million dollars for one season sounds like a rebuild? We could have just kept Heinicke and Cam. The sad truth is nobody on this staff can evaluate quarterbacks or olinemen.

I believe at the time, the salary was not outrageous.  The cap hit in 2020 was only 14m, which is not crazy for a starting NFL vet QB.  Only when we traded him did he cost us the additional cash.

To me, keeping Cam was not an option.  In 2018 he lost his last 6 games in a row (before finally sitting down the last 2), averaging 18 pts and throwing 9 tds and 9 picks.  In 2019, he lost the only two games he played in (cap hit 23.2m).  In 2020, the choice was pay him 20m and hope he holds up or start a rebuild and take a 2m hit.  That's assuming he would not hold out for an extension.  It would be malpractice not to cut him at that point.

Heineke hadn't showed anything at that point but I wasn't opposed to him.  I was in favor with rolling with Allen and signing someone like Flacco cheap to come in and mentor him.  I thought that pair would create competitive games but still land us with a top 5 pick.  Bridgewater was not on my radar and did not like the signing but whatevs.

I won't debate the OL issue.  Pickings have been slim.  They've tried some stuff, but most draft capital has gone to the defense.  This may prove to be the right move in a year or two as these guys mature.  We'll see.

Sticking with the original plan would've meant retaining a 2nd, 4th, and 6th round draft pick as well as the ability to part ways with Teddy to save $21M rather than being stuck with Darnold at the cost of $19M.

Just imagine... this team was in a position to draft Mac Jones. Instead, they decided to pay $17M, a 2nd, a 4th, and a 6th in exchange for Sam Darnold replacing Teddy Bridgewater plus a 6th. That's awful no matter how much somebody hates Teddy for replacing Cam. 

We really could've been in a position to have Mac Jones starting next year behind Christensen-???-Linderbaum-Brown-Moton 😞

The original plan wasn't good anyways. It was also a Hurney influenced plan.

So we got another GM and this plan looks worse, the one year implosion.

But let's not flush this turd away completely. Let a chunk of these people create the new plan...trust the process lol

If the plan was to hire people to nose dive the franchise so that we are forced to do a real rebuild, I think it's working.

      I get the rookie QB formula and fully expected to see it implemented. Oh well. For the run game there was no or very little under center stuff until a good ways into the year. At least that is how I am remembering it. And no deep throwing - so stacked boxes which you can say chicken or egg on why.  Hard to run like that.  The QB that people said was so great was pulled for a designated Hail Mary thrower. That’s pretty unusual. And may speak to why we saw few deep balls in some part, along with the OL. To ignore that stuff means you aren’t working with all of the information when you try to mentally model or project what it might be like on the field.  Me, I have a slice of hope that he could maybe be NFL average but getting him to be a plus type of QB is a huge job. It depends on designing the playbook with certain values at the foundation that have to be adhered to first . You have to integrate the other pieces around this one guy’s skill set because he is a real outlier. And he has to learn the under center skill set. Maybe put that Only Positive thread back up people can go there if they don’t want to deal with rightly frustrated fans.

      I do not pretend to be infallible or without flaws. I've been wrong on things over the years. We all have. Realistically most of what's been said here and on other Panthers fans social media platforms between the months of May and September for the last several years amounts to little more than spam. People drew lines in the sand over contentious takes on Bridgewater too. To the point of being asked if some people are really a Panthers fan over it. There will be reactionary spam during the season too particularly on gamedays. I've been reading these discussions on the huddle for 20 years. It's the same stuff rehashed the only thing that changes are the names in the front office the coaching staff and the roster. Some fans might be best served to stick to the official team social feeds if they are burned out on all this. Nothing wrong with that either. Different strokes for different folks. We're all human. As for the huddle. Honestly most of us post here out of habit. It's a habit hard to break. No different than the majority of the population that can't stop scrolling Facebook or X. Basically.....
