Gilmore and Reddick alone will be half that, at least even with favorable structuring. They will have to be paid, this isn’t a winning team anyone wants to be on.

If you look at the way we have done contracts since Samir has gotten here, he structures them where the cost is on the backend, with outs. He is pretty intelligent when it comes to salary cap management. That's exactly why Tepper hired him.

I expect if we resign Hassan and Gilmore, the deals will be structured similiariy. The salary cap pressure woudnt come until the 2nd or 3rd year, and at that point we are wide open with our salary cap since we are tentivaly scheduled to have over a 100million in cap come 2023.

Clean house.

We can do some moves to free up Cap. Unfortunately that would require a crew that A) has a clear visions, B) has a clear blueprint to make it happen and C) have the skill and experience to pull it off. This organization is lacking all 3.

But there are some hard moves we could make to free up cap. It just wouldn't really matter because all indications are these people would jus blow it again anyways. Fug'em.

Robby Anderson's contract + two unused rookie WRs is enough to make me know this front office and head coach are clueless.

So i did some diving in on Robby's contract. It was not a true 3 year deal, interestingly enough, we can cut him this offseason with minimal impact due to an out clause, and not just that we can cut him in 2023 with zero penalty because his gauranteed money is up at that point.

This is another example of Samir crushing it in the salary cap department. The absolute most cutting Robby anderson would cost us is 3.8million dollars.

So if cut this offseason, we would get 10million back toward the cap
If we cut 2023 offseason, there would zero dead cap in 2024, and we would get 12million in immediate cap savings.

Basically, ever since Samir has gotten here, contracts and cap adjustments are not the numbers you see on the sheet, there is more behind the story. The guy is a fuging savage.

This really wouldnt take much. We structured the contracts to be able to get out of them without heavy penalty. Realistically the only two contracts on our roster that can be considered "trapped" are Sam Darnold (but only 1 year) and CMC (there is an out next year, but still heavy in dead cap for 2024).

We know a healthy CMC is worth it, but SD meh....

We dont really need to clean house, because we can take out the trash without getting finanically destroyed. I know this season sucked, but I feel really good about our financial management compared to the Hurney days.

Sounds nice but the people in charge laid a giant turd this offseason. Expecting them to suddenly get better at evaluation is something I am heavily skeptical about. The house cleaning I was referring to needs to happen in the coaching staff and the front office.

CMC is done at RB. If he isn't willing to make a move to WR then we should do something with him.

He wouldn't impact our salary cap next year because his contract is void. All of the money was accelerated into this last year. It's fake money. Spotrac lists the following:

2022-2023 are dummy years that automatically void ($3.6M of dead cap)

Basically, what this means is that we are bringing the signing bonus (only gauranteed portion of his contract) into the first voidable year. Which is the 3.6m.  I found this to be helpful:

What happens when a contract voids?
All the remaining bonus money is accelerated into that year’s cap. So, a five-year contract with a $20 million signing bonus – $4 million per year – that voids after two years means the remaining $12 million will hit the cap in the third year. Annual salaries typically are not guaranteed in the final years of a contract.

The Panthers won't write a check to Paradis next season but he will definitely impact our salary cap.   His  contract included signing and restructure bonuses that carry across the entire term of the deal:

  • a $9,000,000 signing bonus
  • a restructure bonus of $7,040,000

There are some other bonuses as well like workout but I don't think they impact 2022.   So in the "kick the can down the road" version of being a GM, we'll have our salary cap dinged by Paradis this year and next.

Spotrac has the hit at 8M for 2022 and 4M for 2023.  I understand the 2023 charges but not why the number is so much bigger in 2022.  In any case his salary will continue to haunt the team for the next two seasons.

Those are void. Look below in the bullets on Spotrac. We will only have to pay him the 3.6million because of a voided contract. You pay all gaurantees the final year. Thats why they are orange on Spotrac, they dont count.

We have paid his 9 million dollar bonus at 1.8million per year. Since his contract has two years void, we push up the bonus to next year. That's why we owe him 3.6million at the end of void, and only take that hit for the dead space.

A void contract deal is the exact opposite of "kick the can down the road"... because you dont owe the money at the end of the contract. You only owe the gauranteed portion, and the portion left that is gauranteed is the 3.6million from the 9 million signing bonus. This is what the Saints did with Hill earlier on in the season to create cap space.

This directly from the page you are looking at:

We actually save money if we cut these two, and we are able to double that if we trade them. Teams may not trade for them as starters, but they will trade for them for depth. Future conditional 7th round picks.

Pat Elfein: (has out in contract for 2023)

Trade: Save 6.2 milion
Cut: Save 2.3 million

Cameron Erving:

Trade: Save 4.1 million
Cut: Save 2 million

Basically, neither one of these players will be on our roster next year. If we are able to trade them the dead cap is less than 2 million across both players, if we cut them then the dead cap for next year would be 8million.

I think there is a very real chance Elfein is the starting C next year.

We did it twice, giving in to Robby’s whining before he played 2021 was just as bad. Robby’s guaranteed money is more than Sam’s 5th year. Why not wait until you see if Sam and Robby even mesh before throwing out $15M per season on a WR2 a best?

Even if Sam was solid, what would his contract demand be? 20-22M? Hey, chalk it up as a win that you found someone. Problem is, the risk that he wasn’t good was way more than enough that guaranteeing his 5th year was beyond stupid, as stupid as trading pick 37/38 and more for him in the first place.

Why I think we have to get rid of Rhule now. No telling who from Baylor/Temple he will try to extend and the fact he will likely do anything to save his job; i.e, force a QB in the draft or another dumb*** trade for like, Jimmy G or Baker Mayfield.

    • Yep - honestly though, I thought his coverage was as good as you could possibly do on a man coverage crossing route with Dak having all day to throw. Dak made a perfect throw and if it wasn't in front of Pickens, it could have easily been picked off. Seemed like we ran more man than I have seen our defense run so far this year. Defense also did a great job of playing their gap/zone responsibilities (even if Dak did pick apart our zone a good chunk of the game) - that screen play on the last drive could easily have gone for a touchdown if Moehrig didn't play his zone and make a great tackle. Biggest complaint about Evero was not blitzing a few more times (especially when Dallas was in the red zone). The few times we did it, Dak didn't look comfortable.
    • There was some pretty egregious missed calls vs the Chiefs in the Lions game, especially Kelce. The completion where he clearly used the ground to catch the ball. The hold in front of the ref as Pacheco ran by where the defender was trying to turn around and couldnt because Kelce had him by the jersey. Mahomes openly taunting after scoring a TD. 0 penalties after double digit the week before. Cmon.
    • People get trade happy and look at resources as barter items. They fail to see them as resources to be used to our benefit rather than someone else's. Right now, Chuba and Rico are massive benefits to us and a strong rushing attack so greatly benefits any passer, much less a young one like Bryce still is.  And the better our running game, the more our offense can eat up the clock, the less time our defense is on the field. And that is priceless, too. Don't mess with the running game. Don't mess with the receivers. Maybe look at our O-line and think we may have hit on something good during these injuries. Look at our D-line and seem some strength evolving there. Our secondary has its good spots and some that are still developing. Our linebacking corps did well this last outing. Our special teams are on a major upswing as of this past week. Heck, even our QB is showing us a little something right now that we can build on. Perhaps putting out a yard sale sign right now might be less advantageous than looking at the team and saying, "You are all part of something good that is happening. We want to see that continue to grow."
